Arjun's Manikanda. The movie directed by Selvah features Arjun and Jyothika in lead role. Though it went to floors almost a year ago, it has been troubled by repeated delays. Meanwhile, both Arjun and Jyothika ventured to do other projects. When everyone thought Manikanda was shelved, the Tamil Film Producers Council headed by Rama Narayanan had taken efforts to settle all disputes and ensure an early release of the movie. Now with all negotiations over, Manikanda is expected to hit the screens in December. Hope it emulates its predecessors and put up a good show at the box office.
Manikandan Vidharth Pooja Devaria Kutrame Thandanai Running time 99 minutes
The average running time of Tamil feature films has seen a reduction in recent years. Probably due to over exposure to International films, Tamil film audience. especially the youngsters of this age of digitization have started giving more preference to films with a shorter running time. As a result, except the films of top stars catering to their fan base, almost all other films have an average running time between 2 to 2 1/2 hours. We also get to see a marked increase in Tamil films with a running time below two hours. Some Tamil films even come with a running time of 100 to 105 or 110 minutes. Director Manikandan's debut film 'Kaaka Muttai' that released last year had a running time of just 109 minutes (one hour and 49 minutes) and it became a blockbuster. Vijay Sethupathi's maiden production venture 'Orange Mittai' running time was 114 minutes while the length of director Vetrimaran's National award winning classic flick 'Visaranai' was 118 minutes. Now Manikandan is all set to create another revolution with his upcoming release 'Kutrame Thandanai' scheduled to hit the screens this Friday(September). Probably for the first time or at least as the rarest of rare occasions in the history of Kollywood, this film will have a running time less than 100 minutes. The advance bookings of the film have started and the theaters list the running time of the film as 99 minutes. Yes, you have to believe that the film will just take one and a half hours and nine minutes of your time...!!! If this isn't revolutionary what is ??? All the above-mentioned films have done away with songs.Yes, Tamil cinema is inching closer to reality day by day.
Director Manikandan to remake a Hollywood film
Director Manikandan, who wrapped up Aandavan Kattalai last month, has been concentrating on the release of his second venture, Kuttrame Thandanai. Manikandan said, "The title for this film, Kuttrame Thandanai, was coined by Ilaiyaraaja sir. Many people told me not to approach Ilaiyaraaja for music, but I felt, Raaja sir would be the perfect man for this film. And the music for this film has come out really good. Also, I have got the remake rights for a Hollywood project.” His first movie Kaakka Muttai was both commercially successful and critically acclaimed. With Kuttrame Thandanai and Aandavan Kattalai releasing this month, he will start work on his next ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ soon. With this Hollywood movie rights coming to him, looks like Manikandan will be a busy man for the coming years.
Kaaka Muttai Manikandan’s next ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’
“God looked down on his paradise and said I need a caretaker. They are the Farmer” Though Tamil audience loves to see a film that is built with Love, Action, Sentiment and comedy, they also have a very special respect towards Social - Responsibility movies too. Director Mainkandan’s ‘Kakka Muttai’ is a best example for that. While his ‘Kutramey Dhandanai’ and ‘Aandavan Kattalai’ are ready to hit the screens soon, Director Manikandan has announced his next project ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ which is going to roll from the end of this year. Produced by ‘Eros International Media Ltd’, the film ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ has a 70 year old Man in the lead role and the entire team is in search for the apt character. It is also to be noted that well known familiar faces in Tamil cinema are roped in to play the pivotal roles. “It is really sad to know that Cola factories and corporate industries are playing hide and seek in each and every farmer’s life. Farmer suicides are most rampant in India. They are the starting point of our entire food chain but the occupation in itself is on the verge of becoming obsolete. When Manikandan narrated "Kadaisi Vivasayi" to us, we knew that the film will hit the right chords with all audiences, regardless of any age, gender or class. The film is also in line with our strategy of backing content oriented films which will also be a commercial treat for the audience. The story of ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ revolves around the life of a 70 year old farmer who does not understand the legal rules, laws and procedures …As a layman, how he comes out of the whole issue will be the rest of ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’. The only human being who works for our hunger is... Farmer. We completely dedicate this ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ film to all the real heroes (farmers)…” “After Lingaa and Kochadaiyaan, our upcoming lineup is equally powerful and diverse. We have signed Directors like Venkat Prabhu, Prabhu Solomon, Manikandan and debut Directors Bharat Krishnamachari and Suresh Sangaiah who also depict an innovative school of thought through their scripts, thereby showcasing our range of experienced directors as well as debut directors” says Sagar Sadhwani of ‘Eros International Media Ltd’.

Kaaka Muttai' made me better director, father: Manikandan
Filmmaker M Manikandan says directing the forthcoming Tamil children’s drama “Kaaka Muttai" was extremely challenging, but the experience of working with children has made him a better director and father. “Working with children was very challenging. More than working, it is the process of making them act that’s tough. I like scenes in my movie to be very realistic but it was a struggle to make them perform. By the end of the first week, I almost gave up on the project,” Manikandan told . But he soon realised the struggle was worth it. “If you can work with children and succeed in the process, then working with any actor becomes easy. This experience not only made me a better director but also made me be a better father to my son,” he said. The film, about two slum children's desire to taste a pizza, is releasing in cinemas on Friday. It was an international festival circuit favourite and had its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival and subsequently got screened at film galas in Rome and Dubai. Manikandan believes the film’s release will change the perspective audiences have about festival films. “The general perception about movies that go to various film festivals is not very encouraging. People believe such films are not eligible for theatrical viewing. I’m very confident that my film will change that perception,” he said. It was Manikandan’s son’s longing for pizza that inspired him to make this film. “What got me thinking was why children craved for pizza, but not for fruits or even sweets. I wondered how children from low income background could afford something as expensive. What if kids in the slum who work for daily wages wanted to taste a pizza? What would they do to satisfy their urge? This inspired me to write this story,” he added. National Award winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran agreed to produce the film after being impressed with what he heard. “He had watched my short film 'Wind' and wanted to work with me. I narrated a few lines of ‘Kaaka Muttai’, and he immediately agreed to produce it. A month later, we approached Dhanush for financial support. He took a day to listen to the story, read the script and finally agreed to be part of the project,” he said. As soon as the shoot was completed, Fox Star Studios came on board and agreed to market and present the film. “When Dhanush and Fox came on board, the film had become bigger and it got us lot of attention. It helped us to market the film quite well,” he added. Right from the beginning, the team had plans to send their film to festivals across the globe. “We were prepared to send our film to several festivals, despite knowing it will delay our theatrical release. Even for the world premiere, we had to wait for four months. We had also planned for release in cinemas a couple of months before the National Awards, but we eventually decided to wait and it paid off,” he said. “Kaaka Muttai” won two National Awards for Best Children’s Film and Best Child Actors for Ramesh and Vignesh, who had also bagged awards for the performance at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. By taking it to international festivals, particularly after its premiere in Toronto, the film has already made Rs.60 lakh through sale of its rights in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. If that’s the case, why do most Tamil cinema producers don’t even think of sending their films to festivals? “Most of our films are made from money borrowed from financiers. The interest on such loans is very high. If a producer has to wait for ten months for a film’s release, imagine the amount he’ll be paying as interest. Nobody can afford wasting so much money," he added. The film also features Aishwarya Rajesh in an important role, while actor Simbu has played a cameo.
