'Grand Masti': From reel to bookshelves

Harlequin India Thursday launched the book "Grand Masti: The Fun Never Ends" which is based on the upcoming Bollywood adult comedy "Grand Masti". Joining hands with film producer Maruti International, the publication house has added this book in the erotic imprint: Spice. It is written by Neha Puntambekar. Terming this "reverse spin", Harlequin India Country Head and Publishing Director Amrita Chowdhury said the tie-up was an attempt to tap new markets where the readers would want to know more about the movie. "Usually, we have films based on books, but there are many things in a film that can't be communicated to the audience. This tie-up is complementary to what you will watch in the film," she pointed out. "The novel will talk about characters: How they met and focus on areas that are not shown in the film. It will take off from where the film begins or ends. These are original episodes and not in the movie," she added. Chowdhury said there would be many more similar tie-ups in the future. She said, "...but it all will depend on the ethos and sensibilities of the two brands matching." The trio of Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani and Riteish Deshmukh had featured in the Indra Kumar-directed 2004 film "Masti" that had left the audience in splits. They are now back in its sequel, "Grand Masti", to release Sep 13. Another book, 'Satyagraha: The Story Behind the Revolution", based on the film directed by Prakash Jha, was launched here. The book traces the months of hard work, fun on the sets, costume crises and other events that tell behind-the-scene tales.

After 'Mastizaade', Milap Zaveri's next to be family comedy

Director Milap Zaveri, who has come up with some explicit content for his film "Mastizaade" will next make a family comedy "Mubaraka". "I'll be directing a film which is a family comedy, not an adult comedy. It's an entertainer and is called 'Mubaraka'... it's too soon to speak on it since the casting and other details are being finalized. It's produced by Ashwin Warde, who is the producer of 'Boss' and 'The Shaukeens', and Murad Khetani," said Zaveri at the trailer review of "Mastizaade". Zaveri has previously scripted the sex comedies such as the three parts of the "Masti" franchise. One of the reasons for him to attempt the family comedy genre in his next is that with "Mastizaade", he feels the adult comedy genre has reached its maximum limit. "What we've achieved in 'Mastizaade' is the peak. I don't think any film can achieve more than 'Mastizaade' in the genre of adult comedy. Any upcoming film won't have more masala than this and that is something I can guarantee," he said. Asked if adult comedy has more scope, he replied: "Sometimes a path is created but it has only one direction. When such a path is created, it's not like a freeway from where you can go to different places. "This path has opened up till this level. I don't know if it can open more but if it does open, it's great because creativity should not be controlled." About his Sunny Leone starrer, he said: "Hopefully if it does well, I'll make 'Mastizaade' part 2." The teaser of "Mastizaade" has already gone viral for its dialogue and Sunny's sizzling costumes.

With 'Grand Masti', sleaze here to please!

Sleaze is here to please. And who are we to disagree! "Grand Masti", Indra Kumar's homage to hefty horniness has opened to a massive thundering ovation with youngsters thronging theatres in droves to watch the certifiable sex comedy. This celebration of sex, sleaze and bust seems to have caught the nation's fancy. The reports coming in from all over the country are enormously encouraging. And producer Ashok Thakeria who has teamed up with director Indra Kumar to make movies for 30 years is as pleased as a punch. "We knew we'd get the audience in. We were very clear about our intentions with this one. When we had gone for censor certification we had right away asked for an 'Adults' certificate. "The members of the Censor board were shocked that we didn't even ask for a 'UA'. But why should we, when we were certain that it was meant for an adult audience?" said Thakeria. "Grand Masti" was stopped by the courts in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. But the order was lifted just in time. Relieved and happy Thakeria says: "Aamir Khan asked us what kind of cinema we were making. We told him we are as clear about our intentions while making 'Grand Masti' as Aamir is about his cinema. We are not the least apologetic about what we have made." "If we've ended up offending people with our brand of comedy then why are shows going full everywhere? Long queues of people are being turned away from theatres. Extra shows are being added to many theatres," he added. Not only the producer but Trade analyst are also surprised with the "bumper response" to the film. "Seeing the bumper opening of 'Grand Masti' it looks like a winner. The repeated success of dumb brain-dead films proves we have a huge audience for such films. Sleazy sex comedies with double-meaning dialogues were and would continue to be in demand," said Amod Mehra. Added Tarun Adarsh: "Sex and sleaze can never go out of fashion. The terrific opening of 'Grand Masti' proves it. The masses as well as the youth love it." And we really can't question success, can we?

Urvashi Rautela: 'Great Grand Masti' a family film and not vulgar

Urvashi Rautela, the lead actress of 'Great Grand Masti', says it's a family film and is devoid of vulgarity. On the sidelines of a photoshoot for the Exhibit magazine, Urvashi spoke about 'Great Grand Masti' and said: "It is a family film, not at all vulgar. It's more inspired by 'Masti' (the first film in the series). The audiences can come in with their families and enjoy." Urvashi says that she plays the girlfriend of characters essayed by Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani in the film, the story of which is about how she turns into a virgin ghost. "It is my first comedy film. It is a very interesting story and the character I play forms the main crux of the story, the soul of the film. I am very excited," she said. Urvashi started her film career by playing a homely wife wearing saris in Sunny Deol's 'Singh Saab The Great', but in 'Great Grand Masti', she will be wearing revealing outfits. About the transformation, Urvashi said: "As an actor, it is very important that there should be a character which is slightly 'hatke'. For example, Kajol did a negative character in 'Gupt'. Of course, my character is the solo heroine of the film, but this is a very different, very challenging and very demanding character. "As a creative person, I got the opportunity to do comedy, action and also romance, to live and feel so many emotions and as an actor to showcase yourself to the fullest. To be able to portray such a significant character, I'm thankful to have that level of belief from my producers, my directors and my actors." 'Great Grand Masti', directed by Indra Kumar, is releasing on July 22.
