'Miruthan' was a risky proposition for Jayam Ravi: Director

Director Shakti Soundar Rajan says it was really brave of actor Jayam Ravi to work in his forthcoming thriller "Miruthan", which happens to be Tamil cinema's first zombie film, despite knowing how much risk was involved. "It was an experiment that could've gone wrong and Ravi could've gone from a star with two back-to-back hits to butt of all jokes in the industry. It was a risky proposition, nevertheless he accepted the project with a lot of excitement," Rajan told. All it took the "Naaigal Jaakirathai" director to convince Ravi was one meeting. "He instantly agreed, though he requested two days time to officially come on board. My producer, Michael Rayappan, was equally gutsy, because rarely will you find someone willing to bet on a zombie film," he said. Having already made two films in different genres, Rajan says he chose to work in the zombie genre because he loves to work within the limitations of a genre. "I find that exciting and challenging. After my last film, which turned out to be hugely successful, I had the opportunity to make a film on a large canvas; something bigger than my previous films in terms of budget, too," he said. Shining more light on the film, he said he'd like to view it as a sci-fi action film. "Although there's zombie angle in the story, I personally like to view this as a high-octane action film, which has appropriate amount of gore, acceptable by Tamil cinema standard," he said, and added shooting the climatic action sequence was very challenging. The scene features nearly 500 junior artists as zombies. "Logistically, shooting it was a nightmare. The 500 junior artists would start getting ready with make-up at 1 a.m. and they'd finally get done by 10 a.m.," he recalled. A team of 40 worked in the make-up department, which didn't feature a single foreign artist. "I did not see the need to hire workforce from abroad, though we imported necessary material. Instead, we brought make-up artists who had worked on several Tamil period films," he said. The film, which releases worldwide on February 12, is high on visual effects (VFX) and Rajan hopes most of it will be invisible for naked eye. "There are about 1000 VFX shots and out of which audience may identify 10-15, while the rest will be too difficult to make out," he said. Rajan also brushed aside rumours regarding the film being based on "Warm Bodies" among other Hollywood zombie films. "I find such claims very silly," Rajan said, adding: "There are about 400-500 zombie films. In all of them, you will find similarities, like how the virus is born and how it turns people into zombies." Ravi plays a traffic inspector in the film, which also features Lakshmi Menon.

Swiss audience ‘laughed’ at smoking disclaimers in ‘Miruthan’

Popular Tamil zombie thriller film “Miruthan” was screened at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland, but the audience laughed and “hooted the loudest” when they saw smoking disclaimer in the film, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who attended it, said. The Jayam Ravi and Lakshmi Menon-starrer was screened on Wednesday, read a statement on the film festival’s official website. Kashyap, whose latest film “Raman Raghav 2.0” had its Swiss premiere on Monday, took to Twitter on Thursday to share the response that “Miruthan” received during its screening. “Film festival in Switzerland showing the Tamil Zombie movie, ‘Miruthan’. Guess where they laughed, hooted the loudest? Smoking disclaimers,” Kashyap tweeted. Kashyap was recently in limelight when the controversial film “Udta Punjab”, which was produced under his banner Phantom Films, was asked by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to effect 89 cuts. The “Gangs of Wasseypur” director then moved to Bombay High Court, which later ruled out 88 cuts from the Abhishek Chaubey directorial and ordered the CBFC to issue an A certificate to the film. “Udta Punjab”, which starred Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh, later got released on June 17 and received good response in theatres.

Marmayogi - Fund raiser for Maruthanayagam?

Every passionate filmmaker has an innate desire to express himself or herself with an ideology or thought that is close to the heart. Everyone who is oriented with Tamil cinema knows that Kamal Haasan has been thirsting for quite a while to make a film called 'Maruthanayagam'. The only reason this film is still waiting in the wings is due to the fact that it involves production costs no other Indian film can ever fathom. Knowing Kamal Haasan and his precision skills for perfection, the film would involve state-of-the-art technological gizmo and exuberant artistes, technicians, Computer Generated Imagery and sets that do justice to the period film that Kamal Haasan has in mind. The film did manage to take off some years ago in the presence of Queen Elizabeth but then 'the still to come to terms' Indian film industry was not ready for a trend setting cinematic adventure that Kamal Haasan is very capable of. The venture being called off brought many traits of the film industry into question. The most appalling reason being no production house, not even a conglomeration of production houses wanting to involve themselves in a trend-setting mission and that too having a tried and tested stalwart in Kamal Haasan by their side. Would all these developments simmer down Kamal Haasan's passion for filmmaking? The answer is an emphatic NO. The maverick in Kamal Haasan was bound to take over and the result could be simply spectacular. He seems to be taking on the 'traditionally adhered to production values' all by himself. Taking on the mantle of producing 'Marmayogi' on a first copy basis, the writer, director, actor is hopeful of cashing it big with this project. No guesses again as to where all the money would go. Obviously to realize his dream of making 'Maruthanayagam' come true. Despite Dasavatharam's mixed reviews, the film is running to packed houses. This is testimony enough that the film has indeed penetrated and is permeating within the hearts of general audiences. A huge boost for the lone war that Kamal Haasan is fighting. With general audiences by his side the versatile actor could very well come out on the winning side. If that happens a trend would have been created. A trend that would put Indian Cinema firmly on world screens. Way to go Kamal'.keep fighting'.

Is 'Marmayogi' really 'Maruthanayagam in disguise'?

For well over a decade now it has been very clear that Kamal Haasan has a dream project in mind and that is 'Maruthanayagam'. The project was started way back and about thirty minutes of the film was canned. According to sources, several Crores of Rupees were spent for the thirty minutes and the thought of canning the rest of the film scared away the producers. 'Maruthanayagam' then came to a screeching halt. It can be recalled that when the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, was in Chennai, certain shots were filmed having her as an audience and later the filmmakers showed her some of the already canned scenes. 'Maruthanayagam' as revealed then is supposedly the story of a man who single handedly revolted against the exploits of the mighty British Empire and because of which was hanged to death. But then he had made a mark. The stamp of righteousness and the will to fight for what he knew was right. The character of Maruthanayagam is much like the life of the legendary Spartacus ' the man brushed away to obscurity for being born a slave and yet had the gumption to lead a slave army against the mighty Roman Republic. Spartacus is a character in history who won hearts by perishing the way he did. Rome won on the day it killed Spartacus, but as time the weary traveler plodded on, that victory had become a pathetic failure in terms to how Spartacus had changed the way Rome functioned in the years to come. Spartacus's real intent had reached the world and today he is hailed as a man who stood for the rights of the oppressed. Spartacus had become the real winner. The story of Spartacus was made in Hollywood in the year 1960 with a terrific cast that included Kirk Douglas, Lawrence Olivier and Jean Simmons. It went on to win four academy awards. Kamal Haasan's 'Maruthanayagam' has Spartacus's soul in it and in order to recreate the magnificence of the character, huge sums of money were needed. What makes big news at this juncture is that there is a whiff in the air as to what the connection between 'Maruthanayagam' and 'Marmayogi' could be. Owing to the fact that 'Maruthanayagam' met with protests by a section of the public when it was being filmed and the fact that 'Marmayogi' requires about 120 Crores of Rupees to materialize has brought about the question ' Is 'Marmayogi' really 'Maruthanayagam' in disguise? Moreover, it has been officially declared that 'Marmayogi' is a period film set in the sixth century AD. Has Kamal Haasan started disguising his stories when they are under production much like he disguises himself on screen? The real truth will surface soon.
