Nari Kurava folklore in Mysskin's 'Nandhalala'

After tasting sweet success with his first two films 'Chithiram Pesudhadi' and 'Anjathey', director Mysskin is on a high and is currently acting and directing the film 'Nandhalala'. The film is about two characters, a seven year old boy and a thirty year old 'child-like' man embarking on a journey in search of their respective mothers. They meet a number of people on the way and end up being influenced by them. One such influence comes from a group of Narikuravargal (also known as Kurivikarargal). In what can be termed as the very first attempt, Mysskin has roped in an old Nari Kurava woman to sing a song that hitherto has been exclusive to their community. The association with 'Nandhalala' and Nari Kuravas does not end here. Many of these gypsies have also been made to act in the film. The song features probably to bring about authenticity to the portions that they are involved with. According to reports, Saroja, the name of the Nari Kurava woman hesitated initially when she was brought to the recording studio. After a while she asked if she could get some liquor. After she did have her request fulfilled, the woman sang the song 'Hallile' which stunned everyone present there. Director Mysskin is of the opinion that 'Hallile' could very well be the next 'Vaale Meenu'. The director is also happy that he has been successful in bringing a folk song that has been trapped due to social constraints to cinema. Cinema however will take care of publicizing this song. Incidentally the song 'Hallile' is all about praising God in his entire splendor. ' Nandhalala' introduces 'Kathala Kannala' fame Snigitha as the heroine.

'Naai Kutty' Saga of a slum dweller

Prasanna who has played a sophisticated Non Resident Indian in the film 'Achamundu Achamundu' will be seen as a Chennai slum dweller in his next film 'Naai Kutty'. The film has been christened with this unusual name because the protagonist of the film, as the story goes, was abandoned by his mother in a road side dust bin along with a group of puppies. A rickshaw peddler spots the baby, names him Naai Kutty and raises him. The life of this abandoned baby as he grows up in a merciless and cold world forms the rest of the story. The director of the film S. S. Joe, a former associate of Ram Subbu who churned out the film 'Katrathu Thamizh', was himself raised in the slums of Chennai and so is expected to bring out the emotional and social plight of slum dwellers with reality as the strength. 'Naai Kutty' is produced by V. A. Durai who had produced the films 'Ennama Kannu', 'Looty' and 'Pithamagan' earlier. Actress Nicole has been roped in as the heroine. A host of new comers are also part of the project. Music is by Sundar C. Babu.

Complaint against 'Naai Kutty'

'Naai Kutty' starring Prasanna and Nicole is produced by V.A.Durai and Sadhaji and directed by S.S.Joe. Recently a complaint has been lodged by Director Ram Shiva in the councils of Tamilnadu film producers and directors. Director Ram Siva, regarding his complaint says "The story of 'Naai Kutty' has been stolen from the kannada film 'Nanda Nandita' which was a smash hit in Karnataka. I hold the copyright to remake the movie in Tamil. As the efforts of Durai and Sadhaji to buy the right for the remake ended in vain, they have ventured into remaking the same movie in Tamil with a different name 'Naai Kutty'." It is also allegedly said that the 'Naai Kutty' director S.S.Joe has withdrawn from the project and has left Chennai, to avoid facing the legal problems which would possibly come in the future. S.S.Joe has worked as an associate director in many Kannada movies.

Debutant director Joe opts out of 'Naai Kutty'?

According to reports, Joe, an associate of Ram Subbu who directed 'Katrathu Thamizh' has opted out of his first venture 'Naai Kutty'. This startling piece of information comes after a 'supposed' loggerhead with one of the producers of the film, Sathaji over a change in the story. The other producer V. A. Durai however has stated that there is no problem. The film had its launch function recently and the conspicuous absence of Joe only strengthens the report. Prasanna and Nicole are to star in this film and as reported already, the film is about slum dwellers in Chennai. Joe who was raised in one of the slums of Chennai had come up with a story that captured the true emotions and social dilemma that prevails among slum dwellers. When Sathaji had reportedly asked for changes to the debutant director, a disgruntled Joe decided to walk out of the project. This incident probably is yet another case of a director driven by creative force not budging to commercial norms. Since the producers are not openly acknowledging the rift, let's hope that all is well and the project commences soon with Joe at the helm of affairs.
