Nishabd to be another shocking fare from RGV

Everyone's waiting with bated breath for the new Diva to emerge with 'Nishabd'. Jiah Khan is constantly in the news for her Lolita act in 'Nishabd'. So whilst superstar Amitabh Bachchan will be recording a special song composed by Vishal Bhradwaj for the promotion of the film, all eyes are also on the promo that is going to hit the air waves soon. And the curiosity towards Jiah is reaching a crescendo, since she has been touted as the best discovery since Urmila from RGV factory. Trade insiders who have seen the promo can't s stop raving about the new discovery. As per one of them, "She is the next Urmila. After Rangeela, no RGV heroine has exuded so much of screen charisma & oomph factor & she seems quite aware that she has 'it' in her. 'Nishabd' is gonna shock everyone." In fact everyone is surprised that Jiah has not signed any films in spite of the fact that she has been inundated with offers. According to sources close to her, she is extremely confident about 'Nishabd' and will sign a second film once the promos hit the air.

Nishabd promos off the air?

Why does it keep happening to Ram Gopal Verma movies? In a year that has not been too kind to Ram Gopal Verma, the promotion and release strategy for his films has left much to be desired. First there was this sandwiching technique that RGV had tried to apply by announcing the release of his 'Shiva' and 'Darwaza Bandh Rakho' a week before and after 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna'. The promos did come on air announcing the release date but were inconsistent to leave much of an impact. Later, the release of both the films were postponed and the box office outcome was there for everyone to be seen. Meanwhile he wrapped up his 'Nishabd' and while the film was in its post production, he started his magnum opus 'Ram Gopal Verma Ke Sholay'. Somewhere towards the end of this year, he decided to start the promotion of 'Nishabd' and soon the publicity of the film kick started in a big way. The slick'n'sensual promos were all over the small screen which indeed managed to catch quite a few eyeballs. After all an 18 something Jiah Khan acting seductively in front of a 60 something Big B was not something that could go missing. The release period was announced to be February as well and suddenly all of this seemed to be very much planned and thought of. Hence it comes as a surprise to see the pace go down for the publicity of 'Nishabd'. The promos that had arrived with a bang are suddenly finding them extinct with the promotion of some other films taking precedence over it. A movie that appeared to be coming to the town soon now seems to have gone slow. One wonders if 'Nishabd' would eventually arrive in an anyways overcrowded February that has confirmed releases like Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd., Traffic Signal, Eklavya - The Royal Guard, Shakalaka Boom Boom and Metro lined up.

'Nishabd' back in the reckoning

Ram Gopal Verma's 'Nishabd' was ready months back. In fact the PR machinery of the film had gone amok in plastering news about the film's lead heroine Jiah Khan all over the town. While all this was happening, there were no signs of the film releasing. Meanwhile RGV released his 'Shiva' and then began work for his pet project 'RGV Ke Sholay'. It seemed that the film was stuck in the cans but around late November, the first look of 'Nishabd' was out and the film's teaser promos were all over the satellite media. News about Jian Khan and her real life admiration for Amitabh Bachchan continued to make news and all seemed set for the film to be unleashed at the theatres. Until the film's promotion came to an abrupt stop...! Suddenly the film's promos were pulled off the telly and it seemed that the film would now release all the way after the World Cup since February anyways seemed overcrowded with number of films trying to edge their way past into the theatres. Yet again, everything seemed to have come to standstill before one was surprised once again with the film's release being announced as February 23rd. The film's extended promos too are back on satellite channels once again and though it appears to be a slow beginning, it is expected to peak up soon with just a little over a month to go before the film's release. Meanwhile we continue to keep our ears open about what Jiah has to say about Big B every passing week!

Amitabh Bachchan for Nishabd and Cheeni Kum

Bachchan has been shooting for two films currently. One is Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd and Balakrishan's Cheeni Kum. In Nishabd AB has a romantic love story along with an 18-year old girl. Along with Ram Gopal Varma, AB is planning to do many more movies like sequel of Sarkar and Ek. Bachchan in Nishabd is playing a lover but the movie doesn't touch the physical aspects of their relationship. In Cheeni Kum AB is playing a role of a quite humorous person. His co-star is Tabu. Overall, the movie is hilarious.

"Filmmaker in me was dumb to experiment with Big B in Nishabd and Aag" - RGV

In a very bad and not totally darkened theatre (because of the light leaking through some vents and gaps in the closed doors) called Ramapriya in Vijayawada town in Andhra Pradesh, for the first time I consciously began to understand the phenomenon of Amitabh Bachchan. The film that was playing was Khuddaar and the scene which was going on at that precise moment was, when Amitji learning the lie his own brother told him, barges into the discotheque where his brother is grooving away with a girl. As he shouts at the DJ to stop the music and looks at his brother at the far corner with hurt filled eyes, a gang of vicious looking bouncers move towards him. He looks at them and with an emotion choked voice says that he will break their legs if they try to stop him. There was an audible gasp in the theatre from the viewers as he said this. The interesting point is that none of the guys in the theatre could speak Hindi as Vijayawada is a Telugu speaking town. So what did they connect to? It is just the raw emotions of anger, betrayal, helplessness and above all the hurt he managed to communicate through his body language, his voice and his eyes. As I looked at the faces of the people sitting in the theatre I could see a tremendous sense of awe, admiration, respect and above all a connectivity in their faces. Each and everyone of his viewers connected to him deeply through the characters he portrayed in his various films. Each and everyone wanted a brother or a friend or a leader like him. Even after volumes spoken and big fat books written on him, I think it is still very easy to underestimate his incredible influence and his unimaginable impact not only on cinema but also on at least on a couple of generations conscience. Kids loved him in Amar Akbar Anthony then and Kids love him now in Bhoothnath. I have seen street goondas emulating him from Kaala Patthar, Kaalia etc and modern day gangsters are awe-struck with his intensity in Sarkar. Women used to swoon over his romances then and today's women would want a life-partner like him. Old people back then wanted a son like him and today's old people see the reflections of their own life through his performances in movies like Baghbaan etc. His contemporaries back then were dying of jealousy and unable to understand what is making him tick and today's stars and technicians resume cannot be completed unless and until they feature with him at least in one film. For me Amitji is raw, real and gritty and he hit me like a thunder bolt both as a viewer and as a director. His charisma, his screen presence, his personality made such an impact both on me and millions of others like me unsupported by today's so-called massive production values. Unlike today's superstars he never had to hide behind catchy songs or lavish sets or exotic foreign locales etc. Any random man you pick on the road anywhere in the country, and if you ask him what you remember of Amitabh Bachchan, he is bound to come up with at least a hundred of his favourite scenes, dialogues or moments from Amitji's various films whereas if asked about any of today's superstars I doubt that they will remember beyond their hit songs and their films box-office collections. From the time of being awestruck with him in Zanzeer, Deewaar etc to consciously understanding his screen prowess post Khuddaar (which incidentally largely was responsible in influencing my own technique of shaping up characters in my films), my biggest desire cinematically was to do a film with him which eventually I realized in Sarkar. In the run up to the making of Sarkar in my several meetings with him I started seeing a very different side of him other than what I only perceived through his films. Behind the obvious power and intensity was a sensitivity and vulnerability and also listening to his thoughts made me sense his incredible versatility as an actor. By that time my proximity to him blinded me as a viewer of him as a star and the filmmaker in me got greedy and dumb enough to experiment with him as an actor which resulted in Nishabd and Aag. It's not so much only about the quality of those films that I am talking here but it is just the idea of casting him in those roles. By Ram Gopal Varma
