P Susheela bags Swaralaya award

Playback singer P. Susheela has been selected for this year's Swaralaya-KPAC Sulochana Award. The award instituted in memory of K P A C Sulochana, the great theater playback artist, which carry a purse of Rs 50,000 is given to female playback artists. The award is given to P Susheela for the great contribution that the veteran artist had made to the growth of South Indian film music. Recognized as one of the greatest stars the world of south Indian cinema has ever known, Pulapaka Susheela, born in 1935 at Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh has recorded several songs in most of the Indian languages including Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada. In her career spanning about four decades, she received National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer five times in 1969, 1972, 1978, 1983 and 1984. In 2001, Andhra Pradesh Government honored her with the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award for lifetime achievement to Telugu Cinema. In 2005, she achieved Special Jury Swaralaya Yesudas Award for outstanding performance in music. She is also the latest recipient of Padmabhushan awards.

P. Susheela sings after 13 years

After a 13-year-haitus, veteran playback singer P. Susheela has recorded a song for the movie 'Silanerangalil,' set to tune by Srikant Deva. The lyrics have been written by Vairamuthu. Susheela began her career in 1952 and has won several accolades in the first phase of her career spread across four decades. Indian government has recently honored her with prestigious award Padma Bhushan. 'Silanerangalil' is directed by Malayalam director Jayaraj, who has made many memorable films like '4 The People'. While Vincent Asokan, son of veteran actor Asokan, plays the lead, Navya Nair plays the female lead. Others in the cast include Vineeth, Raghuvaran, Sreeman, Ramesh Khanna and Manobala.

Veteran playback singer Pulapaka Susheela(73), popularly known as P. Susheela, has been conferred by the Indian government with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award for the year 2008. P. Susheela, recognized as one of the greatest stars in south Indian cinema, has sung lot of songs in many languages including Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Sinhalese. Susheela was born in 1935 in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. She was discovered by music director Nageswara Rao, who was looking for fresh talents. It was in her 15th age (1950) when she got to sing her first song, a duet with A. M. Raja - 'Edhukku azhaithaai'. Her sweet voice captivated everyone and she became the favorite of every music director. Right from 1955 there was not a single movie - for nearly three decades - that did not have a song in her voice. She has received National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer five times, two of which were for Tamil songs (1969, Uyarntha Manithan , Paal polave vaan meedhile, and 1972, Savaale Samaali, Chittuk Kuruvikkenna Kattuppaadu). All the other three are for Telugu movies. She has also received state awards for around 15 times from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala governments.

P Vasu - Man with a Midas touch

He is called as a man with Midas touch in Kollywood. Since his En Thangachi Padichava, he has been rendering big hits and there has been no looking back for him. Acclaimed director P Vasu, whose career spanning more than two-and-a-half decades in the film industry, celebrated his birthday on Friday (15 September). Vasu is also known for putting careers of top actors on track and Chandramukhi is a perfect example. Also, when Ajith was on a look out for a hit, Vasu came with Paramasivam. Son of a make-up artist Peethambaram, Vasu learnt the art of film-making from veteran director Sridhar. Vasu is now busy with his assignment in Tollywood with Balakrishna doing the title role. On his son, Shakthi turning into an actor, Vasu says the youngster always aspired to enter the tinsel town and that Shakthi is ready to give his best and make use of the opportunity. The successful director says, 'It is important for a director to keep adapting to the emerging trends and tastes of the audience. Every film is a new beginning and a fresh challenge'.

P Vasu to handle Billa in Telugu

Billa, a yesteryear classic of Super Star Rajnikanth is being remade in Tamil starring Ajith. Directing the movie is young Vishnuvardhan. Nayanthara and Namitha play the heroines in the movie. Meanwhile, efforts are on to produce the movie in Telugu now. Buzz is that P Vasu has been approached to wield the megaphone for the Telugu remake of the movie. Vasu says, 'Billa was inspired by Hindi hit Don. It was also remade in Telugu in 1979 starring N T Ramamrao. Now the remake culture bringing fortunes, plans are on to come up with a new version in Telugu now. Playing the title role would be NTR Junior'. The movie would go to floors in January, 2008.

P.Vasu to direct his son Sakthi

P Vasu is all set to commence his next venture in Tamil. He would be directing his son Sakthi again for his next venture. It may be recalled that Vasu, who rendered several blockbusters including 'Chinna Thambi', 'Nadigan', 'Panakaran' and 'Chandramukhi', introduced his son Sakthi as hero with 'Thottal Poo Malarum'. The movie went on to become a decent hit at the box office. The director has commenced works to start his next in Tamil which will feature Sakthi in the lead role. Efforts are on to rope in Kajal Agarwal, who is busy with 'Bomallattam' and 'Pazhani', as heroine. Vasu says, 'It would be an action-packed venture and would sure appease youngsters'.
