Akshay Kumar becomes bowler for ‘Patiala House’

Action star Akshay Kumar is taking his role as a cricketer in “Patiala House” so seriously that he has been training rigorously under former Test bowler Paras Mhambrey even before shooting has started. Paras, currently working with the Indian Premier League’s Mumbai Indians team, has been taking time off to coach Akshay whenever possible. Akshay has just returned from his back therapy in Germany and wants to continue training steadily and regularly so that his bowling skills are sharpened by the time he starts shooting for “Patiala House”. “Akshay has been training diligently and religiously. His coach Paras Mhambrey even joined him at Malshej Ghat for Farah’s film (’Tees Maar Khan’). Because right after that our cricket sequences start in London,” Nikhil Advani, who is directing “Patiala House”, said. Advani’s British sports coordinator Robert Miller, who handled the hockey and cricket scenes in “Chak De! India” and “Dil Bole Hadippa” respectively, is here right now finalising the list of international cricketers who will play with Akshay in “Patiala House”. “We’re looking at international cricketers from all over the world – England, South Africa, Australia, Bangladesh. The fact that the IPL matches are on makes our job easier because Robert can meet and negotiate with a lot of international cricketers while they are here,” said Advani. The film also requires county-level and regional players who will be finalised after Miller fixes on the big-name cricketers. “I basically need the cricketers from May 25 to June 5 for the various games that we’ll be shooting in England. So we can work our schedules according to the cricketers’ date diaries,” said Advani. This, admits Advani, is easier said than done. “I’ve a real uphill task ahead. And I’ve stopped sleeping with anxiety. But I’ve one expert cricketer on my team already. My leading man Akshay. You’ve to see how well he bowls now.” Akshay is apparently so bowled over by his coach Paras that he now intends to request the former test cricketer to train his son Aarav as well.

There was dispute over content of ‘Patiala House’ trailer: Advani

Nikhil Advani had a difference of opinion with the rest of his team over the content of the first trailer of Akshay Kumar-starrer “Patiala House” as a result of which there was delay in getting it ready for being attached to “Tees Maar Khan”. “All I’ll say is, there was some dispute over the content. ‘Patiala House’ is not a comedy and I didn’t want to pitch it as a comedy. My biggest compliment was when Rishi Kapoor (who plays Akshay’s father) called up to say, ‘You’ve hit a sixer with your first trailer,” said Advani. When Advani visited a suburban theatre to watch TMK on Friday to check out his own film’s hero’s latest offering. Nikhil wanted to see the first trailer of his own film “Patiala House” that was attached to “Tees Maar Khan”. But the trailer of “Patiala House” was missing from the film. “All the prints of the trailers for the Dolby theatres could’t be ready in time. So only about 70 percent of the Dolby theatres could show the trailer of ‘Patiala House’ with ‘Tees Maar Khan’. Unfortunately, I landed up in one of the theatres that didn’t have my trailer attached to the film. Can you imagine? The world saw it. I couldn’t,” said Advani. Was it a last-minute decision to peg the “Patiala House” trailer to “Tees Maar Khan”? “No no. We had decided long ago to attach our first trailer to ‘Tees Maar Khan’. Akshay is a co-producer on both projects. Since ‘Patiala…’ is not a comedy, we decided we’d wait for the release of ‘Tees Maar Khan’ before starting the campaign,” said the director. Akshay admits “Patiala House” takes him into another mood away from the comic. “There is only some black humour in ‘Patiala House’. Otherwise it’s a very dramatic story of a Sikh father who thinks it’s unpatriotic of his British-Indian son to play cricket for the British team against India… Yes, there were creative differences over what the first trailer should look like. I am not just the actor on the project. I am the producer as well,” said Akshay.
