Prince narrates a thief’s race for survival
Adrenaline pumping action, cutting edge technology and with three actresses wooing him, Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi is all set to make a grand comeback as the solo lead in action film “Prince” releasing Friday. Made at a budget of over Rs.40 crore (Rs.400 million) by producer Kumar Taurani, the two-hour-six-minute venture boasts of action sequences exceeding an hour. It is releasing with over 1,000 prints worldwide. Directed by debutant Kooki V. Gulati, “Prince” stars Nandana Sen, Aruna Shields and Neeru Singh as the female lead. Sanjay Kapoor and Dalip Tahil also star in the movie. “‘Prince…’ is my first action film and will showcase me in a new avatar. It’s a story that could be every man’s fantasy and every man’s nightmare,” Vivek had said. Shot across South Africa, Thailand and India, “Prince” narrates the story of a quick-witted thief who wakes up one morning to realise that he has a gunshot on his arm and has absolutely no clue about how he got it because he has lost his memory and that his life is at stake. In his quest to find answers he discovers his name is Prince, he used to work for a man named Sarang and that his girlfriend’s name is Maya. He is being hunted by the secret service of India I Grip, the CBI and the biggest white collared criminals in the world. He realises that he is the most wanted man in the country because only he knows the whereabouts of a heist, which contains a secret that is linked not only to his memory loss but something that also threatens the future of the human race. Prince tries relying on his razor sharp instincts to salvage himself, as the web of deception spins and he gets more entangled, as everyday he meets a new girl who claims to be Maya, he doesn’t know which side of the law he is on and above all he has only six days to live. Vivek lost 12 kilos for the film and had to undergo about five months of rigorous physical training that included skate-boarding, stunt biking, cable training, martial arts, kicks and punches practice. The 33-year-old has also jumped from a 32-storied building to a 28-storied one in the film and that too on a bike. Earlier, titled “Prince of thieves” and “Prince – It’s showtime”, the film has also been in the news for intimate scenes filmed on Vivek with his actresses. Noteworthy is that “Prince” is also releasing simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, apart from Hindi. Despite that April is low on Bollywood big releases thanks to the ongoing Indian Premiere League (IPL), producer Taurani is undeterred. “According to my report, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has not had the same craze this year as it had enjoyed in the last two seasons,” Taurani had told IANS. “Our film is coming in the middle of the series… The IPL craze is at its peak in the first two weeks and during finals so there will be a dull period in between when we will release our film… We are going big time,” he added. Also releasing Friday are romantic comedy “Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai” and Rahul Bose starrer “The Japanese Wife”.
Princess of Travancore to make an appearance in ‘Hisss’
Actress Mallika Sherawat’s forthcoming film “Hisss” has been making quite a buzz and the latest is that Lakshmi Bai, the erstwhile princess of Travancore, will make an appearance in the movie. “Akka” as she is affectionately called by close friends and family, met “Hisss” diector Jennifer Lynch through family friend Govind Menon, who is producing the film. When Lynch was casting for the role of Divya Dutta’s mother, she offered the role to Lakshmi Bai who initially refused. But after much convincing and cajoling, she finally agreed to be part of the film. “Akka is a natural storyteller. Her intelligence and grace are matched only by her incredible instinct about people and their character. It was an honour to be her director,” Lynch said in a statement. “Akka will provide a healthy amount of comic relief in the film, and her character’s storyline is crucial to the plot.” According to sources the princess might be accompanying Mallika during her trips to some cities down South. “Hisss” is slated for an Oct 22 release.
Princess Diana's former home reopens
Kensington Palace, home to Queen Victoria and Princess Diana in the past and from next year to Prince William and his wife Catherine, reopens to the public Monday after extensive renovation. Fringed by manicured gardens, the red-brick palace in central London has borne witness to both the high politics and intimate personal lives of the British monarchy for more than 300 years. Visitors - who officials hope will come in droves during a summer in which London hosts both the Olympic Games and celebrations for the queen's Diamond Jubilee - can explore dozens of rooms in the spruced-up palace. "When you come here, you meet four different centuries of the royal family," chief curator Lucy Worsley told AFP, unveiling the results of the two-year, #12 million ($19 million, 14.5 million euros) makeover. Of course, the 407-year-old building is anything but brand new - but curators have used innovative methods, including light projections and 'whispering' curtains, to bring its rich history to life. In contrast to the imposing splendour of Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth II's main residence, the smaller Kensington Palace has offered something resembling cosiness to the British monarchy. Visitors hoping to snoop around the former living quarters of Prince Charles' former wife Diana or the future home of their son William and his bride, however, will be sorely disappointed. The lavish Apartment 1A of the palace, which William and the former Kate Middleton will occupy from 2013, is carefully protected from tourists' prying eyes, as are the apartments where Diana lived until her death in 1997. And while the palace was surrounded by a sea of mourners' flowers after Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris, today it houses only a small tribute to the "people's princess" in a tiny room at the end of a corridor. Five of Diana's dresses are on display, from a long black tafetta gown by David Emanuel she wore in 1981 for her first public engagement with Prince Charles, to a slinky mini-dress designed by her friend Gianni Versace in 1995.
Saudi prince sentenced to life for murder
A Saudi prince was Wednesday given a life prison term for beating and strangling his aide to death in a luxury hotel in London in what the court described as the final act in a “deeply abusive” master-servant relationship. The judge at the Old Bailey court in London ruled that Prince Saud Abdulaziz Bin Nasir al-Saud, 34, must serve a minimum term of 20 years for murdering Bandar Abdullah Abdulaziz, who was aged 32. “You were in a position of authority and trust over him which you exploited ruthlessly,” Judge David Michael Bean said at the end of the three-week jury trial. The prosecution alleged that the prince, who is a grandson of the Saudi king, was in a gay relationship with Abdulaziz, but this was rejected by his lawyers as not being relevant to the trial. “Whether or not your relationship with him had involved sexual intercourse as well makes no difference to the sentence in this case,” said the judge. If the prince should ever return to Saudi Arabia, he could face execution, as being gay is a capital offence in the kingdom. Abdulaziz was found dead in a luxury suite he shared with the prince in London’s five-star Landmark hotel Feb 15, following what the prosecution alleged was a sustained campaign of “sadistic” abuse. “It is very unusual for a prince to be in the dock on a murder charge. But your trial has proceeded in just the same way as anyone else’s would in this court,” the judge said. “No one in this country is above the law. It would be wrong for me to sentence you either more severely or more leniently because of your membership of the royal family in Saudi Arabia,” he added. Al-Saud, a member of one of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful families, had tried to claim diplomatic immunity when he was first arrested. Prior to the opening of the trial three weeks ago, he admitted to killing his victim, but denied murder. However, a jury found him guilty of murder, and not the lesser charge of manslaughter. The court was shown graphic footage of a ferocious assault by al-Saud on his victim in the hotel lift Jan 22. It also heard that the two men had spent weeks in London on extended shopping trips and frequent visits to restaurants and bars. “The most chilling aspect of that footage is that your victim did not resist at all. He was so completely subservient to you that after being treated as a human punchbag he followed you meekly out of the lift,” the judge said. The attack which finally killed Abdulaziz left him with multiple injuries, including bleeding in the brain, a fractured larynx and bruising in the abdomen. “To this day you have not explained why you killed him,” the judge told al-Saud, who showed no emotion when sentence was passed.
