Director Ram Gopal Varma revealed a softer side of his heart as well the enormous respect he has for the Big B when he made an apology to Megastar Amitabh Bachchan for persuading Big B to act in 'Aag' and 'Nishabad'. Big B in return gave a replay that can be cherished by Ram Gopal Varma for ever. Although in both the films Amitabh was seen in roles that he has never done before, the films turned out to be total disasters at the box office. During the trailer release of 'Sarkar Raj', the director of the new film told the media that in a way he misused the great actor by giving him the two roles and in spite of Big B having apprehensions on these two roles, he forced him to bring these characters into life in the screen. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan in response praised the director for making him do that roles as for him as an actor it was quite challenging to do justice to that characters and it was an entirely new experience for him. The Bollywood star also said of himself as a great fan of Ram Gopal Varma's films and that he has a great faith in the film maker. Being a self confessed die hard fan of Amitabh Bachchan right from his younger days, what more does Ram Gopal Varma need than these humble words of admiration from his greatest screen idol.
Ram Gopal Varma- surely the unpredictable
Ram Gopal Varma had told before that Amitabh Bachchan is one of the reasons why he got attracted to the Tinsel Town. Now Big B has inspired Ramu to keep aside his computer illiteracy and be internet savvy. So the master of gangster movies who till now never thought of becoming a blogger has started to speak his mind out through a blog. RGV says that he tried to go for the unexplored territory after seeing the dedication of Mr.Bachchan to his blog. But don't expect the hot shot director to be just as keen to update like Big B and make his blog a window to the events in his personal life. The unpredictable director has already said that he has neither the interest nor the time and patience to keep updating his space every other day and that out of the numerous queries that he gets from the public, the ones that he feels is to be answered will be given the replies. The director who had earlier laughed of the idea of joining the blogging bandwagon has now said that if he had considered this idea of communicating personally with his admirers before, he could have cut short lots of speculations about some of his earlier movies very easily. Mr.Varma said that when 'Nishabd' was released everyone thought it to be a take on the Hollywood flick 'Lolita'. At that time there was no channel through which the reasons why this film is not at all based on 'Lolita' could be explained in a proper way. For the lakhs of fans of this Bollywood filmmaker, this blog is a great way of knowing the director inside him and also to get clear explanations about his future projects. Ram Gopal Varma has made it clear that the blog is a platform for a self conversation as he feels that expression of thoughts becomes very difficult once the questions are thrown at you and not a substitute for the interviews. In the coming days Ram Gopal Varma will come to know personally about a certain fact that till now he might not have felt that much. There is a good chance that he gets amazed to know the large number of people from around the world who are his die hard fans.
Ram Gopal Varma meets Gautham Menon
Noted Bollywood film-maker Ramgopal Verma was in Chennai on Monday to promote his to-be released 'Phoonk'. The movie stars popular Kannada actor Sudeep in the lead role. Interestingly Gautham Menon had a visitor call on him in Chennai. It was none-other-than the acclaimed director Ram Gopal Varma. The two reportedly discussed the nuances of film-making. It is not clear yet if they discussed any future project. Gautham is currently directing Suriya for 'Varanam Ayiram'. According to RGV, ''Phoonk' will be hitting theatres on the 22nd of August, he said, It's a scary tale. The tagline of the film is already there'€” 'its superstition till its happens to you''. It is the story of an atheist construction engineer Rajiv, his wife and two children. He ridicules both God and the dark forces. All of a sudden, one terrifying day, an evil force strikes his household and brings it on the verge of destruction. The very foundations of his atheism, convictions and beliefs are thoroughly shaken, thanks to black magic.'
Ram Gopal Varma talks about PHOONK success
PHOONK has taken a huge opening at the box office. With near 100% collections all over and continuing to go strong show after show, the film has given Ram Gopal Varma yet another success this year after SARKAR RAJ. Ramu talks: "Any filmmaker primarily wants to make a film which people will acclaim. The collections are more the Producers and Distributors concern. But the collections also indicate how many people actually saw the film. Does one feel that the film has served the purpose because a few individuals like the Print & Television critics say it is good or is how many tickets audience bought? Without batting an eyelid even the most award savvy Director would say that it is the audience buying tickets which is important because it will at the end of the day it will be his primary objective to see that as many people as possible watches his work. In the year Satya released 'Godmother' got the National Award and Satya was completely ignored. Godmother ran for 2 weeks and Satya ran for 25 weeks in the same theatre and 10 year later Satya is remembered as a cult-film and the jury members of the National Award committee would have forgotten both Godmother and its Director; and worse they would not have been even bothered to follow that Director's career. I always knew that it is the audiences not the critic's reviews which made Satya work so tremendous. They gave as much or better reviews for Maqbool, Khamosh Pani, etc and we all know their box-office fate. A prominent critic mentioned in his review when Raat released that time, that it is an unintended comedy. Apart from him most reviews too trashed it. 15 years later many critics of present times term it as a cult-classic. That's not because Raat was ahead of times but the critics of today were just audience at that time and hence unbiased. Anyway to cut a long story short, not to undermine 'Mumbai Meri Jaan' or its maker who received raving reviews compared to 'Phoonk', I just would like him to answer sincerely from his heart whether he himself would have preferred glowing reviews and opinions from critics or the collections of 'Phoonk'?"
Ram Gopal Varma's visit to the sets of Mallika
Few years back, Mallika Sherawat and Ram Gopal Varma worked together in his directorial Darna Zaroori Hai a few years back. Unexpected tiff over certain issues had their good relationship drifted apart and indeed that happened to be the most favorite thing of media channels. Fine! All these things were put off once Director Ram Gopal Varma visited the sets of Mallika's upcoming film Hissss. Once Ram Gopal Varma heard about the film made by Hollywood technicians, he was right on his heels of visiting the sets to see the works of special effects director Robert Kurtzman. For longer hours, Ramu did stay there glimpsing through the filming process by the versatile technicians. More enthralled by the fascinating style of filmmaking, Ram Gopal Varma said that Hissss will be one of the greatest films ever churned out in India. Merely, the auteur has expressed his wish to work with Director of Special Effects, Robert Kurtzman in future. Mallika Sherawat was more excited with Ramu extending his wishes for the success of film'
Ram Gopal Varma announces RANN - A NEWS STORY
After SARKAR RAJ, CONTRACT and PHOONK in 2008, Ram Gopal Varma would be ready with his next film in 2009. He has named it RANN - A NEWS STORY. RGV speaks: I have titled the film I am going to make on the media as RANN - A NEWS STORY. RANN means battle. And battle is a fight between large organized forces. In the context of a civil society and its deep complexities, large organized forces (read news channels, political parties and industrial czars) are not just involved in a fight with each other, but more importantly and frighteningly, they are battling a war within themselves and this is especially true of news channels. If dog bites man, it is not news. But if man bites dog, it is news. And if a cat bites a dog, it's Breaking News. Getting news is not the easiest thing in the world, so the next best thing obviously would be to make anything and everything appear to be news. The way the news are presented today are much more entertaining than family soaps and thrillers. What's worse is that we enjoy this kind presentation so much that we have got addicted to them for our daily dose of fun and drama. AND HIGH DRAMA IS WHAT 'RANN' IS GOING TO BE. There is the government - a system which runs the country, then there are wealth creators like industrialists etc. and then there are politicians in the ruling party and the opposition. All the above in a democratic society are supposed to be working for the common people and the one and only means of the common people having any idea as to what those are up to is through the media. Hence the media has been invented as a truth telling machinery serving the purpose of the common people so that they know they are in good hands or in case they are told that they are not, they can hope to exercise the power of their vote to bring about a change. But in a free economy system where there is so much competition the media by default is lost in its purpose. The Media is a reporting agency. It reports News. NEWS is what is new. New is what you hear for the first time. So to be able to be the first to tell you the various Newspapers and Channels have an intense competition among themselves and this they do on a need to survive, on an ego to be on the top and on a greed to get rich. To be ahead of competition means more circulation and higher TRPs which in turn generate more and more Ad revenue which will translate into making more and more and more money. Also the fact that in the process the people who run the media realize their power of influencing the common people inevitably makes them power hungry. To sum up this film's intention would be to expose the behind-the-scenes truth of how a truth telling machinery by the very virtue of its positioning has no choice but to corrupt itself to become a money-making and power-brokering enterprise. As Friedrich Neitzsche says, "Truth is Terrible"
