'Sultan' director 'rocked' by Delhi earthquake

"Sultan" director Ali Abbas Zafar was scouting locations for his forthcoming Salman Khan-starrer here when an earthquake rocked the city. The director took to Twitter to share his experience as he posted: “Location scouting Delhi for @SultanTheMovie and rocked by the #earthquake... Well action is about to begin.” He also shared an image of India Gate with people gathering around the landmark. Delhi and neighbouring areas were hit by a 7.5 Richter Scale quake, with its epicentre in Afghanistan, which jolted large parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India. The tremors led to panic among people. Produced by Aditya Chopra under his Yash Raj Films banner, "Sultan" is reportedly based on the life of a wrestler and the "Dabangg" star will be seen in the lead role. His leading lady in the film is yet to be announced. The film, which is scheduled to release on Eid in 2016, has already taken Zafar to Punjab and Los Angeles. Even Salman has gone the Aamir Khan way and is beefing up for the role as he had told earlier that his fans can expect to see him in "double size" in his "Sultan" big screen outing.

Saif wants to be the real rocker

Every guitar player who is a sincere rock music follower will say that the feelings of a strange kind of ecstasy produced only when you face a crowd and tame the strings with the other members of a band rocking the stage cannot be substituted for any other pleasure that is available in the world. The simple reason why this cannot be done is because the moods of being liberated, energetic and totally free that one gets while playing simply cannot be created by any other means. Lately Saif Ali Khan has also started to get the strong urge to perform more and be a better guitarist. The 'Rock For Charity' concert organised recently in Mumbai in which the Chote Nawab also played with the famous rock band Parikrama, could not have come at a better time in the actor's life. The injury to his fingers caused due to playing the guitar after a long time and the experience has instilled a new longing in Saif's mind to practice his guitar more frequently and after talking with some of the players from other bands, Saif has decided to hone up his guitar skills by playing in small venues. The actor also says that he seriously need to get out of the amateur player's zone and that he want to play with a group of friends, jamming and enjoying himself without any care in the world. This renewed interest and thrill to really become a good rock guitarist has come as a god send gift for Saif who has been offered the lead role in a film to be directed by Imtiaz Ali titled as 'RockStar'. Of course Saif is much exited about playing the role of a rock musician but right now he is getting a little bit apprehensive thinking of whether he is competent enough to give life to the role. The film star says that Rock music is about a lot of attitude. More than just playing with an attitude, it's a way of thinking and that he needs to be more true to the music. Saif also adds that it' easy to call any star a rock star but it more than your lifestyle as it about being able to live your life the way you want. Right said, Saif, you know how it is to be done, just go ahead and do it with your new found spirit.

Soyuz rocket places satellites into orbit

A Russian Soyuz rocket successfully blasted off from French Guiana on Friday bearing the first two satellites in Europe's Galileo global positioning system, a much-heralded mission that will redraw commercial competition in space. The launch from Europe's space base in South America was the first time that Soyuz, which first flew in 1966 and traces its roots back to the earliest Cold War intercontinental ballistic missiles, has taken off from outside its old Soviet Union bases. The rocket lifted off at 7:30 am local time from the base near Kourou, French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America, and the Galileo satellites separated four hours later. Heavy rain had no impact on the operation. "A new chapter has started in Europe's history," said Jean-Yves Le Gall, Arianespace chief executive. The culmination of more than a decade of planning, the launch had to be delayed by 24 hours from Thursday after a leaky valve was detected in the rocket's fuelling system. The EU commissioner in charge of industry and space policy, Antonio Tajani, said a new tender would be announced on Friday for six or eight satellites of the Galileo group. He added that the commission wanted to reduce Galileo's costs by 500 million euros ($695 million). Once fully operational later this decade, the Galileo system aims to give Europeans autonomy from the U.S. government-controlled Global Positioning System. Russia says it recently completed its own similar system. Rather than build a new rocket from scratch, Europe decided to build a 467 million euro launch pad for Soyuz in the French Guiana base where it already launches its Ariane rocket family. France has covered more than 80 percent of the construction costs and all of the 70 million euro cost overruns. In return, the Russian State Space Agency (Roscomos) will receive tens of millions of euros for each rocket that is built and shipped from its Samara Space Center. "Soyuz will give us a complete range of launchers," Le Gall told. Arianespace plans to launch at least two Soyuz rockets a year from now on in addition to its Ariane-5 heavy-lift launcher, and the rocket series will be completed by a smaller vehicle, Vega, slated for launch next year. Contracts for 16 Galileo satellites have already been signed: four with Franco-German maker Astrium and 12 with German company OHB. The Galileo line should have 30 satellites by 2020. "I will announce a new tender for the construction of six or eight satellites," Tajani told reporters at the Kourou spaceport. "The signature of the new contract is planned in February." Arianespace is principally owned by the French Space Agency (CNES) with 34 percent and Astrium, a wholly owned subsidiary of European aerospace giant EADS, holding 30 percent. Friday's launch follows years of discussions, delays and budget disputes over Galileo since France and Russia agreed in 2003 to co-operate on Soyuz launches. "Soyuz is only the beginning of a cooperation that will go much further," said Russia's deputy prime minister Sergei Ivanov.

India’s rocket launch postponed

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has postponed Monday’s rocket launch, meant to put an advanced communications satellite into orbit, following the detection of a leak in its Russian-made cryogenic engine. The rocket, called a geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV), was to carry GSAT-5P, an advanced communications satellite meant to retire an earlier one sent up in 1999 and ensure continuity of telecom, TV and weather services. According to a statement issued by ISRO Sunday, the GSLV launch scheduled for Dec 20 has been postponed due to a minor leak in one of the valves of the Russian cryogenic stage/engine. The leak was observed during the pre-countdown checks. The 29 hour countdown, planned to commence at 11.01 a.m. Sunday, was not authorised by the Lauch Authorisation Board. The board met during the forenoon at the Sriharikota rocket launch centre to review the results of pre-countdown checks and decided against proceeding with the mission. According to ISRO, the revised satellite launch date will be firmed up after ascertaining the cause of the leak and taking appropriate remedial action.
