SRK enthrals Dhaka crowd

Bollywood badshah Shah Rukh Khan enthralled a packed show in Dhaka, dancing to his hit numbers and also spoke snatches of Bangla. But the superstar did not campaign to make the Sundarbans mangrove forests one of the seven natural wonders of the world as the organisers claimed he would. At the show, titled ‘King Khan Live in Dhaka’, the over 25,000-strong audience comprising mostly youngsters kept up a chant of “Shah Rukh”, “Shah Rukh”. Shah Rukh led a team of Bollywood actors, including Rani Mukerji and Arjun Rampal, and singers along with Bangladeshi artistes to put up a show that was “memorable for its wonderful performances”, New Age newspaper said Sunday. Despite a claim by the organisers and Bangladesh Tourism Board, “King Khan did not campaign for the inclusion of the world’s largest mangrove forest, the Sunderbans, as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World”. Shah Rukh was to raise his voice to vote for the Sunderbans, media reports said. Reaching out to the audience, the Indian superstar said in Bengali: “Ami Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman-er deshey Bharatbarsho thekey onek onek bhalobasha aar shubhechcha boye enechhi.” (I bring India’s good wishes to the nation of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding leader). “I’ve heard of Kazi Nazrul Islam, Jasimuddin. I love Runajee’s (Runa Laila) music. That’s why I’m in Dhaka,” The Daily Star quoted Shah Rukh as saying. Bengali belle Rani Mukerji danced to a medley of hit songs from her films, including “Saathiya”, “Hum Tum” and “Shava Shava”. Dazzling the audience with her smile and girl-next-door charm, Rani spoke to the audience in Bangla and said: “You folks have been supporting me since the beginning of my career. I want your love and support more in the days ahead, so that I deliver better performances.” Arriving dramatically on a motorbike, actor Arjun Rampal too tried his hand at speaking Bangla. “How is Dhaka? I love you,” Arjun yelled in Bangla. Switching to English, he said, “Couple of days ago I suffered a back injury, but I had to come to Dhaka. I didn’t want to disappoint you all.” Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji entertained the crowd by dancing to songs like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Mitwa” and other numbers from their hits.

Rani Mukherji honoured

The Indian Film Festival 2010 has commenced in Australia and New Zealand. Interestingly the festival is giving special honours to Rani Mukherji by organizing a ‘Rani Mukherji Retrospective’. Being tagged as ‘Queen of Bollywood’, the event is screening Rani’s films including ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, ‘Hum Tum’, ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, ‘Black’, ‘Paheli’, and ‘Saathiya’. According to reports, the festival is being held at Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth in Australia and Auckland in New Zealand, and concludes on April 15. Gracing the inaugural ceremony of the festival, Rani had stated that she is there mainly to promote culture and movies and nothing else. The fest has come in the wake of Indian-Australian strained relations. “We are here for the larger number of Australians who love our cinema. We are (here) for the Indians and the Asian communities who watch our movies, so we are here for a greater cause,” quoted the actress. Also Rajkumar Hirani whose film ‘3 Idiots’ will be screened here, said to the media, “You can't generalise and say that a country is against us. The incidents are sad but one wouldn't like to say that every person, every Australian, walking down the street is against Indians. These types of incidents happen in India also.” Besides ‘3 Idiots’, the festival will also screen other Bollywood films namely ‘Dev D’, ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’, ‘Dostana’, ‘Ghajini’, ‘Kaminey’, ‘Love Aaj Kal’, ‘Luck by Chance’, ‘New York’, ‘Paa’, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and ‘Wake Up Sid’. Priyadarshan’s award winning ‘Kanchivaram’ and well-acclaimed Marathi film ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’ are among the regional films that are going to be included in the ‘Beyond Bollywood’ category.

When Rahman rechristened Sujata!

She was Sujata till Rahman found her golden voice. And today, singer Madhushree, the popular crooner is more than just a name to reckon with in Bollywood. Today, after her album Lagi Lagan is hitting the popularity charts consecutively or the tenth week, Madhushree is not the kind who crests on glory. She is busy singing for Ah Rahman for his next film. Says Madhushree, "Though I was a face, there was a time when I thought I should go back to Surniam due to inconsistency of exciting projects. That is when Rahmanji who had christened me Madhushre, offered me Naina Milayke in Saathiya. Then came Kabhi Neen Neem from Yuva which not just reinstated my position but also helped me bag the Stardust Award. Rahmanji is my mentor and it is a privilege singing for him always. I treat each time as though it were my first."
