Man vs Machine The 'Endhiran' saga
'Sujatha' Rangarajan, a magnificent writer in the Tamil language showed his fascination for modernity with many of his works. The element of human life that is changing ever so rapidly thanks to technological advancements has been a subject of intense fascination for him. The late writer had written a script with the core of having an antagonist in the form of a Robot. He had even thought of having Kamal Haasan play the role. But then the script has been lying around for a long time with no takers as the film would involve a whopping amount if it has to see the light of day with the right effect. Along came a film director Shankar who had always made it a point to insist on Sujatha's talent in his films. After the huge success of 'Sivaji', Shankar was looked upon as a man who could churn out lavish films nationally. Sujatha Rangarajan's 'Robot' became a viable option when Sharukh Khan made public his desire to work with Shankar. The name 'Robot' was copyrighted by Shahrukh's production house Red Chilles. But then things fell apart as Shahrukh was not convinced totally with the project. Rajinikanth-Shankar combo had worded wonders at the box office and people were thirsting to see the two come together for another project and so the superstar was roped in for 'Robot'. Then came Aishwarya Rai into the picture. Shooting has begun for this film that went through a name change to 'Endhiran'. The 'supposed' story of 'Endhiran' has already surfaced and the following is probably what the film is all about. The film is about a scientist, played by Rajini who lives about 200 years in the future. He is passionate about making robots that have the ability to rationalize things. Designed to help humanity the robots are themselves like humans with many emotions. One such robot (played by Rajini again) is tampered upon by people of evil intent. And so this robot lives a life of its own putting humanity at risk. To boot to the mayhem this robot even falls in love with the scientist's girlfriend (played by Aishwarya Rai). The film is expected to be released in the summer of 2010. The story does sound interesting, but then we'll have to wait and see if the balance between modernity and traditional human emotions exists. Technical details are being worked out right now. Since the story was written by Sujatha a long time ago, the filmmakers have decided to add in the necessary updates. A team of about 250 people have been assigned the responsibility of researching these updates. 'We just would have needed one person in Sujatha to work on these updates. Since he is no more, we need 250 people to fill in for him', rues director Shankar.
KIDNAP - A David and Goliath saga
Well-known writer Shibani Bathija, associated with blockbusters like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Fanaa, is excited about the theatrical release of the keenly anticipated Kidnap. Commenting on how the sensational newcomer of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Imran Khan, got signed up for the project, she reveals exclusively, "A friend had seen Imran at Aamir Khan Productions' office and said he looked interesting. 'Interesting' is what we needed for Kabir so I mentioned his name to Sanjay (Gadhvi). Sanjay saw Imran and called me immediately to say that we had found Kabir." She adds, "Kidnap is a man vs. boy story. It's a David and Goliath saga so we needed the competition to look unequal. Imran's rawness and boyishness works vis-a-vis larger-than-life Sanjay Dutt." Elaborating on her first reaction on seeing Imran, Bathija adds, "I met Imran first at his house when Sanjay (Gadhvi) and I went to give him a narration. He was exactly what I had in mind when I wrote the character of Kabir four years before setting eyes on him. Kidnap was destined for Imran." Remarks director Sanjay Gadhvi, "I am proud of Shibani because she wrote the script of Kidnap even before she worked on Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Fanaa. This is really one of her initial scripts. It so happened that these films released before and we started making Kidnap only last year. As for Imran, I signed him much before the release of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. So when the latter became a hit and everyone went gaga over Imran, I said this is just the beginning....wait till you see him in Kidnap!" Released by Indian Films - Studio 18 worldwide, Kidnap is the grand Idd attraction in cinemas on Wednesday, 1st October.
D-Day' not an underworld saga: Nikhil Advani
D-Day" director Nikhil Advani asserts that his film is not a regular underworld or 'bhaigiri' film, but a serious espionage thriller based on the country's intelligence agency RAW and its operations. Actors Arjun Rampal, Irrfan and Huma Qureshi are playing RAW agents in the film. "There is no connection to the underworld. It is about terrorism, it is about bringing back India's most wanted man. It is an espionage thriller. All three of them and Aakash Dahiya, they are spies, they are RAW agents," said the director here at the music launch of the film Sunday. "There is no 'bhaigiri' in the film. It is about India, it is about four patriots," he added. The film is slated for a July 19 release and it stars Rishi Kapoor in the role of an antagonist. Shruti Haasan too features in it.
MM wishes Sagi Venky a happy b'day!
It is indeed a happy birthday for victory Venkatesh. He is flush with the success of 'Thulasi' and his fans are asking for more action. With three hits in a row and his audience wanting more from him, what else can a star ask when he is entering the last years of his 40s. He is off on a holiday with family. He confesses son Arjun had watched 'Thulasi' and got carried away by a few scenes, but refrains from disclosing what he does for dad dearest on his birthday. 'He is too young and I want to keep him away from the limelight,' he says with a calm smile. 'Just about everyone thinks it's Arjun who had acted in 'Thulasi', but I will give him some time before he debuts on screen. After all, since he is from a filmi family, he is bound to be fascinated by the celluloid world. But it will be many years before he will decide on his career and at that time, he will do where his destiny would lead him,' he says with his usual philosophical twist. As for the future, he has plans of starting his own production house, to start working on scripts that he likes and to continue to search within himself. Well, he had started out with the Art of Living and Sudarshan Kriya, but says he has moved beyond them now. 'The search is constant and directed inwards. The effort to better myself as a human being is an on-going process,' he says. On a more material plane, he is said to have looked into scripts, and the ones he had given the nod to, would be announced before he returns from his trip. He is likely to do a film each for Yogi, Manjula, Shekhar Kammula among others. Once back, he will begin shooting before he takes off for the cricket series in Australia in March. 'Watch out for me, you could find me in some stadium for sure,' he laughs as he says good bye. We at MM wish him many more happy returns of the day!
