Manisha Koirala denies divorce rumours
Bollywood diva Manisha Koirala, who triggered a storm of gossip about an impending divorce following a hasty online comment, says things were blown out of proportion and she is still happily married to her Nepali entrepreneur husband. The 40-year-old acclaimed actor, who is attending the International Film Festival of India that kicked off in Goa Monday, found herself in the eye of a storm both at home and in India after she posted a comment on her Facebook account last week, saying she was mulling divorce after only four months of marriage. The remark, made after what she says was a minor spat, made the social network grapevine go into a tizzy, fuelling speculation that the actor was already ruing her marriage to Samrat Dahal, a Nepali entrepreneur five years younger and a non-entity till she tied the knot with him in a three-day wedding extravaganza in Kathmandu in June. Before leaving for Goa, Manisha, who is said to be planning to make a film in Nepal with her fellow actors in Bollywood, Jackie Shroff, Danny Denzongpa and Gulshan Grover, told the Kantipur daily that she had temporarily shifted to her parents’ residence in Kathmandu because she was unwell and not due to any marital estrangement. “I was born in Biratnagar (a sunny town near the Indian border) and lived in Mumbai,” Manisha said. “So I find it cold in Kathmandu.” Manisha, who said she was suffering from cold, opted to stay with her parents for a few days as her husband was also out of town, the report said. Manisha’s family Tuesday also denied the rumours that her marriage was on the rocks. Her father and former minister Prakash Koirala told the local media that a lovers’ tiff had been blown out of proportion. “The news is baseless,” the former politician said. “Manisha has always been in the public eye and people are interested in her life. Previously, there were speculations about her marriage; now, it is her divorce.” Manisha, who deleted the controversial post soon afterwards, added a clarification, saying she was “super happy” with her husband. “I was angry when I wrote that post,” she said. “Sometimes I just react and write silly things.” Besides her marriage, Manisha is now also working on resuming her career in Nepal’s film industry, shelved almost two decades ago when she left Nepal after just one film to start an illustrious innings in Bollywood with Subhash Ghai’s blockbuster film “Saudagar”. Her comeback Nepali film “Dharma”, where she plays wife to Nepal’s reigning star Rajesh Hamal, is set to be released this winter. The film has been preceded by her re-entry in the ad world where she began promoting Home TV, a direct to home satellite channel service.
It’s not an arranged marriage
One of Bollywood’s most beautiful and footloose divas Manisha Koirala is all set to tie the knot with her Nepali beau Samrat on June 19, but clarifies that it’s not an arranged marriage. “Yes, I’m getting married to Samrat. He’s from Nepal, like me. But please, it is not an arranged marriage,” Manisha, who will move base to Kathmandu after the wedding, said. “Yes, our families know one another for some years now. So there was a comfort level between me and Samrat for a very long time. Gradually the bonding grew from friendship to love. And when Samrat asked me to marry him, I agreed,” she said. Manisha returned to Mumbai from Kerala Wednesday to the news of her marriage all over the place. “I was totally cut off in Kerala shooting for Shayam Prasad’s Malayalam film. I had no idea my marriage plans were being discussed in my absence. Now I see dates and venue in the papers. Like I said, the wedding is on June 19. It will take place in Kathmandu and will be attended by Samrat’s and my close family and friends,” said the actress. Manisha, who entered the Hindi film industry with Subhash Ghai’s 1991 blockbuster “Saudagar”, will now spend more time in Kathmandu. “That’s where Samrat is based. He is into many kinds of business ventures including a project in alternate energy. So yes, one thing will change. Mumbai used to be my first home. Now Kathmandu will be my first home. But I’ll continue to be a Mumbai girl at heart and will have a home here.” So is her dream of a home in Paris over? “No way!” said the fiery Nepali beauty. “My dream home in Paris has just been postponed for a while. Now instead of me alone, it will be my husband and I sharing a Parisian home.” In fact, the couple plans to honeymoon in France. Speaking on her work, Manisha said: “I’ve been cutting down my assignments for a few years now. So it’s not as if I’ve been working frantically. I will continue to do selected films after marriage.” As forthright as ever, Manisha volunteers the information that she broke up with her last boyfriend, American Chris Dolan, long ago. “We split quite some time ago. But we continue to be friends. That’s the way I like it in my life. Even when a relationships ends, the friendship continues. I don’t like any negativity around me. I’d like all my friends to wish Samrat and me a happy married life.” Samrat apparently is shy of the limelight. “He had his picture removed from a social networking website as soon as our marriage was announced. Samrat will have to get used to public attention after we get married,” she said.
Manisha Koirala to wed Nepali businessman?
Bollywood actress and the daughter of one of the most powerful political houses in Nepal, Manisha Koirala, seems finally set to tie the knot – and in Nepal. The 40-year-old actress, the country’s most eligible single woman, will finally say “I do” to Nepali businessman Samrat Dahal with the wedding set for June 19. “Mutual acquaintances told me about a week ago that Manisha Koirala was getting married in Nepal,” said Nepali film director Dipendra Khanal, whose upcoming release “Dharma” will mark the return of the actress to the Nepali film industry nearly two decades after she left Nepal to storm Bollywood. Manisha, presently shooting in Kerala for a Telugu film, will return to Kathmandu Friday, Khanal said. She was in Nepal last month to attend the last rites of her grand-uncle Girija Prasad Koirala. At a press conference afterwards, she said the patriarch of Nepal’s politics and five-time prime minister had lamented to her that nobody loved him; people flocked to him only to get something out of him. She was asked about her wedding plans but she parried the questions without divulging her new romance. The would-be bridegroom was reportedly educated in the US and is a businessman. While not much is known about him, his father Surendra Dahal made his fortune in the leather industry. The wedding will be a three-day extravaganza that is expected to see Mumbai’s stars descend on Kathmandu. Manisha, grand-daughter of Nepal’s first elected prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala, had a minor fling with politics in 2005 when she supported King Gyanendra’s bid to seize power with an army-backed coup. However, the move backfired and led to the abolition of monarchy in Nepal, once the world’s only Hindu kingdom. It is being speculated that Manisha could enter politics finally. Her aunt Sujata Koirala is the deputy prime minister of Nepal while two of her uncles are MPs. Her father Prakash Koirala was a minister in King Gyanendra’s cabinet but was expelled by his Nepali Congress party that led the pro-democracy movement against the king. Manisha acted in just one film in Nepal, “Pheri Bhetaula” (We will meet again), that was, however, never released. She got her big break from modelling in Nepal when she was cast by Bollywood director Subhash Ghai in “Saudagar” and then went on to act in such acclaimed films as Mani Ratnam’s “Dil Se” and “Mumbai”, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Khamoshi” and Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “1942: A Love Story”.
