Maestro Ilayaraja has several firsts in his musical career spanning three decades. He has composed music for over 800 films in various Indian languages and won several awards and accolades. Ilayaraja, who won several awards in his career, is all set to achieve a new record. For his forthcoming film Ajanta, Ilayaraja has composed a total of 36 songs attempted never before in the history of Indian cinema. Even the maximum in early 1940s and 1950s were just 30. All the songs were composed in just three days, sources say. According to director Kathaga Thirumavalavan, 'All the songs have come good with Ilayaraja's touch in it. Based on classical raagas, the songs will attract all sections of the public cutting across language barriers.' The movie features Ramana in the lead role. The audio will be out shortly.
Three songs of Rahman nominated for Oscar
Expectations are riding high on our very own A R Rahman now. The reason? Well, three songs of the prodigy have been nominated for the Oscar! There is a separate category for the 'Best Original Song' in the Oscar award categories every year. This year, which happens to be the 79th year of the award function, the Academy released a list of 56 songs that will compete with each other, of which three songs are Rahman's. The songs include two songs from Rang De Basanti namely Khalbali and Luka Chuppi and one song from Water namely, Chan Chan. Here's hoping and wishing that Rahman, an inevitable part of India's pride, wins the award and elevates India's position in the international film arena. All the best Rahman!
Three cheers for Tamil cinema
It is joyous time for Tamil cinema. When it was murmured that the Tamil cinema has lost its quality and drifting towards commercial masalas, movies like Veyyil and Paruthi Veeran provided some respite. These movies not just won rave reviews but also made a good run at the box office. The latest buzz doing rounds is that movies including Paruthi Veeran, Veyyil and Thangar Bachchan's Pallikoodam may go to Cannes Film Festival this year. The film festival, considerd a prestigious show on earth, would reportedly screen Veyyil, Paruthi Veeran and Veyyil. Thangar Bachchan is giving final touches to Pallikoodam and confirmed that attempts are on to get the movie screened at this year's edition of Cannes.
Three biggies keep Kollywood guessing
The whole of Kollywood is waiting with great expectations for three films this summer. Rajinikanth starrer Sivaji, Kamal Haasan's Dasavatharam and Vikram's Bheema are the three prominent films which the audience is waiting for release. All the three are mega-budgeted films featuring who's who of Tamil cinema. Interestingly all these three films share a common thing between them. Plans are on to release a CD on the making of these films soon. Director Shankar, who is wielding the megaphone for Sivaji had recently stated in an interview that efforts are on to come out with a CD on the Making of Sivaji. Lingusamy has already commenced works in this regard for his film Bheema. Sources close to Kamal Haasan say Dasavatharam, featuring Kamal Haasan in 10 different makeups, has been shot in various locations in a big manner. Director K S Ravikumar has been shooting the making of Dasavatharam in a grand manner which would be made available for public viewing after the release of the film.
Three cheers for Vijay
The triple action mania has gripped Kollywood tight it seems. The latest to join the list after Ajith, Vadivelu and Vivek is Vijay, who would apparently act in three different roles in a movie to be directed by Gautam Vasudeva Menon. Sources say that though Gautam is busy with Varanam Aayiram and the untitled film in which Trisha is acting in the lead, he is also preparing himself for the mega movie, in which he would join hands with Vijay for the first time. 'The movie would be an action thriller and Vijay would act as a police officer after Pokkiri', say sources close to the director.
Three Horse Race This Friday.
Three movies are releasing this Friday. All of them are totally opposite to each other and with reasonable amount of publicity backing each one of them. The biggest of them is the family entertainer 'Vivah directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the maker of huge hits like 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' and 'Hum Apke Hain Kaun'. Starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, this journey from engagement to marriage is not carrying good reports. The biggest drawback is the lackluster music score by Ravindra Jain. Mr Barjatya has given family hits earlier but somehow the makers themselves don't sound too confident about their own product which was evident at the recent Press Conference. Although I would want 'Vivah' to work, for Sooraj Barjatya comes across as an extremely amiable and sincere person, but I don't think his film will work. Percept Picture Company has started publicity for Tanveer Khan's 'Deadline' rather late in the day. The date of release was announced rather abruptly and although the promos of this Konkona Sensharma, Irfan Khan, Sandhya Mridul and Rajit Kapoor film seem pacy-n-promising, the film hasn't really created any buzz. The title 'Deadline' may go against the film and even the posters where Konkana's face is superimposed on Irfan's is confusing about the plot of the film. It shall not be taking a good opening and its biggest plus point is its low cost. If the word of mouth is good then it can make a jingling sound for the producer's ears. But that once again is a big 'If'. Lastly, Mukta Arts' comedy film 'Apna Sapna Money Money' is one film that seems the only one that can do some magic at the ticket window. This Sangeeth Sivan (Remember he made the raunchy 'Kya Kool Hain Hum' stars Riteish Deshmukh (As a drag queen and more hilarious get-ups), Shreyas Talpade (red hot after imposter-act in 'Dor'), Koena Mitra, Riya Sen and Celina Jaitley (Ample Oomph Quotient). It's a comedy with club house numbers composed by Pritam. I would bet on this one'. Why don't you guys tell us which film out of the three you would want to watch this weekend. And why!
