'Wajah Tum Ho' - Movie Review
The thought of an empty bus ride home lost its charm after December 16, 2012. I hope you have healed a little, Nirbhaya. It's ironic that of all 200-odd films made in a year, it is 'Wajah Tum Ho', which finds itself in theatres today. The reason I bring up Nirbhaya's story is because the film shows a gangrape — sensational, titillating and handled insensitively. It is graphic and makes you cringe. The men in power, who brutalise the victim, walk away scot-free till her revenge is plotted. Pitched as a thriller, the movie opens with the live telecast of a murder. The accused is a TV channel owner Rahul (Rajniesh Duggall), who probably fashioned the incident for TRPs. His company's legal head, Siya (Sana Khan), defends him even if it means going against her boyfriend, opposition lawyer Ranveer (Gurmeet Choudhary). We have a Singham-like cop mouthing smart-ass punch lines (a poker faced Sharman Joshi) trying to solve the kutta-lomdi khel. The fairly simple plot got made into a film only because a few chauvinists needed some 'entertainment' to go with their popcorn. A lady 'happily' spends the night with a multi-millionaire even if he is a rapist only because he is willing to pay her bills. Of course, that would be a pretty apt description of the modern world, thinks director Vishal Pandya. In the middle of a courtroom, Siya rubbishes the case against her client, calling out to its lack of logic, pretty much summing up this bizarre movie. The onion-like plot, that has multiple farcical layers, only makes you weep at the fate of Hindi movies. The actors do a flimsy job, caring more about their presumably hefty pay cheques than their characters. I felt the worst for Sharman, the only sincere one in the ensemble cast, looking for the merit of his previous work ('3 Idiots', 'Rang De Basanti'). Alas, nothing clicks. Not the dialogue-baazi or Duggall as the constipated antagonist. The vision of Sana and Gurmeet cuddling each other to the classic Pal Pal is any Kishore Kumar fan's worst nightmare realised. It's a great watch for those looking for cleavage shots of busty ladies heaving and all. The men aren't much of a delight in that department — in one scene, a woman sprays perfume on her guy before doing 'it'. A cue for body hygiene, and also to make better movies that don't trivialise rape. No Nirbhaya, India hasn't changed much. We still objectify women — zoom into their butts and breasts to sell tickets. Hope you are in a better place.
After HUM TUM, animation reaches next level in TRRP
Remember the adorable characters HUM and TUM in Saif Ali Khan-Rani Mukherjee starrer HUM TUM? The two worked perfectly fine in taking the narrative of the movie forward. Now Yash Raj Films' next offering TA RA RUM PUM has taken a cue from their own successful formula and gone a level up by incorporating an entire track featuring animated characters. Well, this not all as this time around the track also intersperses entire TRRP family comprising of Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee and their two lovely kids! An out and out animated number that is as flawless as it can get, whether it is Hollywood or Bollywood, the title song 'Ta Ra Rum Pum' features a bear family of 4 that dances along and makes merry with the TRRP family. Watch out for it and you would surely be smiling along all the way!
Dimples look in Tum Milo styled by late sister
Short, grey hair, stringed glasses and frocks picked up from the streets… Dimple Kapadia goes de-glam for her role as a Parsi woman in “Tum Milo Toh Sahi”, a look styled by her late sister Simple who died of cancer last year. “It was Simple who came up with the idea of giving Dimple a short hairdo and frocks to wear for her Parsi look in ‘Tum Milo Toh Sahi’,” director Kabir Sadanand said over the phone from Mumbai. “Simple was my buddy and she gave many more inputs from her side for all the actors in the film before she passed away.” Dimple plays a 50-plus owner of an Irani cafe in Mumbai in the film. The crew went hunting for clothes from street shops to give the glamorous Dimple the authentic look. “We wanted her character to look as authentic as possible. So we went and bought skirts, frocks and shirts off the streets of Mumbai. She sports stringed glasses which we bought from a Parsi optical store in Colaba. “Dimple has also used a quilt which was knitted by her mother to make her character have the old world charm. We have not at all gone for any designer stuff for her,” said Sadanand, for whom “Tum Milo Toh Sahi” is his second outing as a director. The director, who made his debut with “Popcorn Khao! Mast Ho Jao” in 2004, says he could not have found a better actor for the movie that shows how love can happen at different ages. “I could have never found someone so committed as her for the role that she has played. She takes every character beyond all levels and makes it look so beautiful. Through this movie, I wanted to show Dimple’s inner beauty, not the outer beauty that she is known for and I hope we have managed it well,” he said. Sadanand says Dimple was adamant about using a whitener on her hair to look like an older woman running a cafe, even if the role didn’t quite require her to do so. “I told her that 50-year-old women no longer have white hair and that they all use hair dyes. But she said – ‘I want to do it’. Such is her dedication.” In the movie, Dimple, 52, features alongside Nana Patekar, with whom she is teaming up after 16 years. Their last outing together was “Krantiveer”. Other actors in the movie include Suniel Shetty, Vidya Malvade, Anjana Sukhani and Rehan Khan. Produced by Nikhil Panchammiya, it will release April 2.
