Close on the heels of the release of Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi, Shankar is gearing up for the release of his next production venture Veyyil directed by his one-time associate Vasantha Balan. With his lucky mascot Bharath playing the hero along with Pasupathy, Shriya Reddy and Bhavana, Shankar is hopeful of releasing the movie this August. Veyyil, quite typical to Shankar's 'S' Pictures' earlier venture will have an innovative storyline and script. Says director Vasantha Balan, 'Quite appropriate to the title, we wanted to shoot the movie in a place which is haunted by scorching sun almost all through the year. We chose Virudhunagar as the location'. Interestingly Virudhunagar has barren lands and a couple of theatres were pulled down recently paving the way for houses and shops. Shooting a movie rekindled the craze among the localities for the movies. Another highlight of the movie is debutant music-composer G V Prakash scoring tunes. Nephew of A R Rehman, G V Prakash has sung few songs including Chikku Bukku Rayilae, Shock Adikuthu Sona, Azhagana Ratchasiyae and Kadhal Yanai Varugiradhu Remo. All songs have come good and Prakash is a talent to reckon with in the coming years, adds the director.
Veyyil under spotlight
Director Shankar's home production Veyyil, directed by his former associate Vasantha Balan will eventually hit the screens this November. After Mudhalvan, Kadhal and Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi, Shankar's S Pictures has made Veyyil starring Bharath, Bhavana, Pasupathy and Shreya Reddy in lead roles. Veyyil, quite typical to the objective of S Pictures, will have an innovative storyline and script, says director Vasantha Balan. 'Quite appropriate to the title, we wanted to shoot the movie in a place with blazing sun light through the year. We settled for Virudhunagar after doing a lot research. The town came alive again during the shoot as a spate of theatres had closed shop paving the way for houses and shops to emerge.' Music has been scored by debutant G V Prakash (A R Rehman's nephew). The songs are already a big hit. 'I saw the spark in Vasantha Balan when he did a film for Kavithalaya banners (Album). Getting the audience encouragement is the big motivating factor. Hope he would do a much better job in Veyyil', says Shankar.
Veyyil to cast a shadow in Cannes too
Director Vasantha Balan is over the moon now. His Veyyil has been selected for screening at the most prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The movie would be screened on 19 May at 5.30 pm. Produced by Shankar, the movie stars Pasupathy, Bharath, Bhavana and debutant Priyanka in the cast. Music is by G V Prakash. According to a letter sent to producer Shankar by the Government of India Directorate of Film Festivals- 'Veyil has been selected for screening in the 'Tous les Cinemas du Monde' (All the Cinemas of the World) section at Cannes.' A happy Vasantha Balan says, "I owe it all to producer Shankar. The industry needs the likes of him, who encourage new talents and fresh ideas without compromising on the quality.'
'Veyyil' selected for Cannes Film Festival
Shankar had earned a good recognition as one of the best directors in India. However, he has a passion to produce films also and he used to encourage the talented technicians as directors. This time he chose Vasanthabalan as the director of his film 'Veyyil' and that film was proved a big hit and won the critical acclaim. There were positive review from various newspapers and the media. The film had completed centenary at various centres. Though the south Indian films try their best to earn a place in International Film Festivals, very few of them get an opportunity. This time, Veyyil had got the opportunity of screening at the 60th Cannes Film Festival. As the film is being screened abroad, the film makers gave sub-titles to it to enable the viewers the content of the dialogues and others. It may be mentioned here that Cannes Film Festival is one of the best in the world. Over 30,000 movies would be screened and at least 1,000 directors, 5,000 producers, 4,000 distributors and an equal number of journalists from across the world would grace the festival to be held in France between May 16 to 27. The title of this year's festival is 'All The Cinemas of the World'. According to information Veyil would be screened at 'Le Cinema DU Monde Theatre' at 6.30 pm on May 19. The selection of a Tamil film in general and 'Veyil' in particular would remain a milestone in the history of Tamil cinema.
