'Provoked' world premiere at IIFA

In a television interview IIFA brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan was stumped when the interviewer asked him the reason for King Khan Shahrukh's absence from the awards ceremony in spite of the itinerary being out a long time ago. Bachchan in his typical diplomatic style gave an evasive answer but his body language clearly suggested that the differences between Big B and Badshah Khan have reached a standstill. The other news from Dubai is that International Indian Film Academy premiered Jagmohan Mundhra's 'Provoked' as the IIFA World Premiere Film for 2006, amidst a star studded premiere. The Red Carpet and premiere was attended by superstars Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar at the Grand Cineplex in Dubai. World’s tallest tower saves 3,200 KW daily

Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, saves up to 3,200 KW of energy every day by tapping solar power to heat the 140,000 litres of water required by its occupants. This translates into an annual saving of 690 MW, said Ahmad Al Matrooshi, Managing Director of Emaar Properties that constructed the tower. “Energy efficient measures, especially through use of renewable sources, are not an option but an imperative for sustainable growth. By leveraging solar power, Burj Khalifa is setting an example as well as creating a referral mark on how urban developments can effectively integrate energy-friendly initiatives,” he added. The heating system is installed and operated by SOLE UAE Solar Systems, Europe’s oldest solar thermal company, WAM news agency reported. Its significant benefits include cost savings on energy uses as well as reduced pollution levels, leading to a healthier environment, said John Owen of SOLE UAE. A total of 378 solar panels of 2.7 sq metres each, are installed at the roof of the building. These panels function on the basis of photovoltaic electricity generation technology and can heat 140,000 litres of water in approximately 7 hours. Burj has also adopted several other measures to reduce water and electricity consumption in the complex, which houses luxurious residences, commercial suites, swimming pools, health facilities and restaurants.

World Bank gives $45 million loan for improving highways

The World Bank Wednesday extended to India $45 million technical assistance loan to help strengthen institutional capacity of its National Highways Authority (NHAI). The technical assistance loan from the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development unit has a five-year grace period, and a maturity period of 18.5 years. “This technical assistance loan will help NHAI adopt global practices that would enhance its operational efficiency as it implements this critical infrastructure programme,” said Venu Rajamony, joint secretary of the finance ministry’s department of economic affairs, after signing the agreement here. Reiterating the government’s commitment to remove any constraints in road infrastructure, Rajamony said the government has entrusted the responsibility of improving the capacity of India’s core highways to the NHAI. According to a finance ministry statement Wednesday, nearly 40 percent of the total road traffic in India plies on the national highways network and this share is likely to increase with vehicle growth touching 10 percent annually in recent years. About 30 percent of the total national highways network is still single-laned, while 53 percent are double-laned and only 17 percent is four/six/eight-laned. The central government launched the National Highway Development Project in 2000 aimed at improving the conditions of highways in the country. The project is being implemented by the NHAI.

World Cup warm-up: Dhoni leads Indian run spree

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni not only scored a 64-ball 108 not out but also saw his wish for middle-order partnerships come good as India galloped to 360 for five in 50 overs after winning the toss and batting first in their cricket World Cup warm-up game here Wednesday. After losing openers Virender Sehwag (23) and Sachin Tendulkar (17) by the 10th over, the Indian innings was propped up by Gautam Gambhir (89 off 85) who was involved in a 106-run stand for the third wicket with Virat Kohli (59 from 68) followed by a partnership of 68 with Dhoni. The captian, in turn, put on 124 for the fifth in the company of Suresh Raina (50 in 26). Dhoni’s blitzkrieg lasted 64 deliveries and his knock contained 11 boundaries and three sixes as India moved from a leisurely jog to a sprint to post a massive total. Earlier, Tendulkar and Sehwag provided a rather sedate start on a pitch that offered some early bounce that the tall Kiwi seamers exploited. Tendulkar was first to depart when caught in two minds, bowled by Tim Southee while Sehwag was done in by a Jacob Oram delivery that kept low. Thereafter, India took the upper hand with Gambhir and Kohli opening their shoulders. Gambhir, coming off an injury, was lucky to be dropped when on 14 (83 for 2) by James Franklin who grassed the catch, diving forward at long-off. The Indian innings switched to turbo mode when Dhoni took charge and raced to his half-century off 40 deliveries before stepping up the pace by slamming seven consecutive boundaries, five off seamer Jacob Oram and two off off-spinner Nathan McCullum. Along with Raina, the skipper raised 50 for the fifth wicket in just 28 deliveries and doubled it in another 17 balls. Raina too joined the big-hitting party ground the Kiwi attack that increasingly looked pedestrian. After Raina’s departure, Dhoni duly completed his century in the final over of the innings much to the delight of the huge turnout. The Kiwis skipper Brendon McCullum rotated his bowlers, but none, including the two spinners Luke Woodcock and Nathan McCullum both of whom were restrictive at best without looking penetrative. As for the seamers, after their initial fire and zest, proved fodder for the Indian middle-order batsmen who indulged themselves with stroke-filled innings.
