The old favourites are Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) and a lot of other players I assume are going to do well in this world cup.” John had played a football player in “Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal” and he says he would have loved to be a professional footballer if he could re-do his career.
World Cup warm-up: Dhoni leads Indian run spree
Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni not only scored a 64-ball 108 not out but also saw his wish for middle-order partnerships come good as India galloped to 360 for five in 50 overs after winning the toss and batting first in their cricket World Cup warm-up game here Wednesday. After losing openers Virender Sehwag (23) and Sachin Tendulkar (17) by the 10th over, the Indian innings was propped up by Gautam Gambhir (89 off 85) who was involved in a 106-run stand for the third wicket with Virat Kohli (59 from 68) followed by a partnership of 68 with Dhoni. The captian, in turn, put on 124 for the fifth in the company of Suresh Raina (50 in 26). Dhoni’s blitzkrieg lasted 64 deliveries and his knock contained 11 boundaries and three sixes as India moved from a leisurely jog to a sprint to post a massive total. Earlier, Tendulkar and Sehwag provided a rather sedate start on a pitch that offered some early bounce that the tall Kiwi seamers exploited. Tendulkar was first to depart when caught in two minds, bowled by Tim Southee while Sehwag was done in by a Jacob Oram delivery that kept low. Thereafter, India took the upper hand with Gambhir and Kohli opening their shoulders. Gambhir, coming off an injury, was lucky to be dropped when on 14 (83 for 2) by James Franklin who grassed the catch, diving forward at long-off. The Indian innings switched to turbo mode when Dhoni took charge and raced to his half-century off 40 deliveries before stepping up the pace by slamming seven consecutive boundaries, five off seamer Jacob Oram and two off off-spinner Nathan McCullum. Along with Raina, the skipper raised 50 for the fifth wicket in just 28 deliveries and doubled it in another 17 balls. Raina too joined the big-hitting party ground the Kiwi attack that increasingly looked pedestrian. After Raina’s departure, Dhoni duly completed his century in the final over of the innings much to the delight of the huge turnout. The Kiwis skipper Brendon McCullum rotated his bowlers, but none, including the two spinners Luke Woodcock and Nathan McCullum both of whom were restrictive at best without looking penetrative. As for the seamers, after their initial fire and zest, proved fodder for the Indian middle-order batsmen who indulged themselves with stroke-filled innings.
World Cup: Watson, Johnson set up easy Australian victory
Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson lived up to their pre-tournament billing as they set up Australia’s 91-run victory against Zimbabwe in a Group A World Cup match here Wednesday. Watson (79) starred with the bat as defending champions Australia recovered from a bad start against some disciplined bowling by Zimbabwe to put up 262/6 on the board. Australia’s famed pace attack then scythed through the Zimbabwe top order, with Johnson taking four wickets for 19 runs. The other Australian pacers, Brett Lee (1-34) and Shaun Tait (2-34), also bowled impressively. Off-spinner Jason Krejza chipped in with two wickets. Zimbabwe had raised hopes after restricting Australia to a chaseable total, but the batsmen failed to make a match of it. The minnows lost wickets upfront and were soon four down for 44. Sean Williams then scored 28 while Prosper Utseya (24) and Graeme Cremer (37) provided some late thrust to the batting but by then it was too late and they folded up for 171 in 46.2 overs. Earlier, electing to bat, Australia recovered from a slow start. The defending champions scored only 19 runs in the first seven overs, with the Zimbabwean slow bowlers recording economical spells and complimenting their only seamer Chris Mpofu (2-58), who made good use of the new ball. Australian openers Watson (79, 92 balls, 8×4, 1×6) and Brad Haddin (29, 66b, 3×4) chose to bide their time in the middle and looked rather restrained, with the first powerplay fetching only 28 runs. But Watson soon cut loose, with Haddin happy playing the second fiddle and runs came at a furious pace. Mpofu met with harsh treatment in his sixth over when he was tonked for 17 runs. Watson and Haddin added 61 runs in their opening stand when Utseya gave his side the breakthrough by trapping Haddin leg before. Skipper Ricky Ponting, playing his first international match after his finger injury during the Ashes, looked in good touch, toting up 28 runs, and with Watson rustled up 79 runs for the second wicket before the two departed in quick succession. Watson fell lbw to Cremer and an over later, Ponting was found short of his crease to an accurate throw by Mpofu from mid-wicket. Michael Clarke (58 not out) and Cameron White (22) steadied the innings, adding 63 runs for the fourth wicket. The Zimbabwe bowlers did a good job of taking wickets at regular intervals but Clarke carried his bat through to anchor the Australian innings
World Cup Afridi spins Pakistan to 46-run win over Canada
A match-winning five-wicket haul by captain Shahid Afridi helped Pakistan survive a scare before beating Canada by 46 runs in a low scoring World Cup Group A match at the R.Premedasa Stadium here Thursday. Leg-spinner Afridi picked up five for 23 as Pakistan successfully defended a low total of 184 by bowling out Canada for 138 in 42.5 overs. Afridi was also adjudged as the Man of the Match as Pakistan won its third consecutive match in the mega event. Canada raised hopes of creating an upset for the second consecutive day in the World Cup as they were 104 for four in 33.3 overs. But Afridi ran through the batting order as Canada lost six wickets for just 34 runs. For Canada, Jimmy Hansra was the top scorer with 43 off 75 balls that included four fours and a six. Zubin Surkari shipped in with 27 off 67 balls. Afridi described his team’s poor batting show as a wake-up call and urged his players to show improvement ahead of the tough game against New Zealand in Pallekele on March 3. “It is a wake-up call for us,” said Afridi. “We gave a poor performance with the bat and need to improve,” he added. Ashish Bagai, the Canadian captain, said that his team was disappointed to lose after giving an impressive performance in the first half of the match. “Afridi was just too good,” said Bagai whose team is yet to taste a win after three matches.’ Earlier, making good use of the overcast conditions, the 23-year-old Chandigarh-born Harvir Baidwan (3/35) bowled at a good line and length to get rid of opener Ahmed Shehzad (12), Younis Khan (6) and Saeed Ajmal and gave Canada a realistic chance of causing an upset. Pakistan, who went into the match with impressive wins against Kenya and Sri Lanka, were completely out of touch as the batsmen kept throwing away their wickets. Young middle-order batsman Umar Akmal (48) and vice captain Misbah-ul-Haq (37) were the only batters who managed to spend some time at the crease while extras (24) were the third highest scorer. Skipper Shahid Afridi chipped in with 20 off 17 balls. Jimmy Hansra (2-23), Rizwan Cheema (2-33) and Balaji Rao (2-50) were the other wicket-takers for Canada, who lost their first two World Cup matches against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe by huge margins. Pakistan lost their first four wickets for 67 by the 16th over but Umar and Misbah gave the innings some stability with a 73-run partnership from 117 balls for the fifth wicket . But after the fall of Umar and Misbah, things fell apart from Pakistan. They lost their last four wickets for just three runs.
