One of the Icons of Indian Arts and Culture Girish Karnad has been honored with ambassadorship of UNESCO's International Theatre Institute.

The Paris based organization in a unique way has absolutely honored about a dozen other personalities including British theatre and film director Peter Brook, Italian playwright Dario Fo, French theatrical legend Ariane Mnouchkine and German choreographer Pina Bausch.

Karnad, who is 70, has a credit of Pan Indian theater personality since his plays have been translated and produced in several languages over the span of forty years.

He has been honored with Sangeet Natak Akademy in 1972, Padma Sri in 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1992 and Jnanpith Award in 1998.

He also associated with parallel films and acted along with Nasrudeen Shah, Om Puri and others and had vast appearance in regional language films including Tamil.
