Unsuitable Tamil titles not to get tax benefit

Tamil Nadu Government, which announced a tax concession to the film with Tamil titles, has now put some restrictions in availing the benefit. The rule passed a couple of years ago to encourage the usage of Tamil, has been amended yesterday (March 4) by the government.

It has been made clear that the government would not extend the tax concessions being granted for films with Tamil titles, to those named unsuitably in Tamil. The move aims to curtail the practice of using Tamil titles just for the sake of getting tax benefit.

The state government had announced full exemption of entertainment tax to films which had Tamil titles to encourage the industry as well as to promote Tamil language. But the true purpose behind the announcement has not been served, as the language was being "butchered" in the name of film titles during recent times, an official release said here.

According to the announcement, the concession will now be made only to those films that have Tamil titles in a suitable manner.

Though how the suitability will be judged is not mentioned, this announcement will definitely bring out a change in the way titles are given to the films.
