A Senate standing committee has postponed its meeting scheduled for Saturday to discuss the manner in which cricketer Shoaib Malik was treated in India after it became known that he and tennis star Sania Mirza were to wed.
Committee chairman Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi, while confirming the postponement of the meeting, told Online news agency it would be held soon after the senate session.
Officials of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the sports ministry would also be summoned for the meeting, he added.
After it was announced that Shoaib and Sania were to wed, the cricketer’s first wife Ayesha Siddiqui, filed a police complaint against him in Hyderabad, accusing him of cheating and demanding that he divorce her first.
After consistently denying he had married Ayesha, Sohaib on Wednesday granted Ayesha divorce.
The issue had generated considerable heat in the Indian media, with both sides taking extreme positions.
