Sarja was born in Karnataka. He initially wanted to become a police officer. He went to police training and was selected but later opted to become a film star. He has acted in over 200 films in five different languages. His wife Niveditha( Asha Rani) is also an actress who has acted in a Kannada movie called Rathasapthami with Shivaraj Kumar. Sarja has two daughters, Aishwarya and Anjana. His nephews Chiranjeevi Sarja and Dhruva Sarja both act in Kannada movies.
Sarja started as actor in Kannada film Putaani Agent 1-2-3 with director Rajender Singh Babu. He then moved to Tamil and Telugu films. His first Tamil film was Nandri in 1984. His films in Tamil include Gentleman (1993), Jai Hind (1994), Kurudhipunal (1995), Mudhalvan (1999), Rhythm (2000), Ezhumalai (2002), Giri (2004), Marudhamalai (2007) and Mankatha (2011). In Telugu, he appeared in the 1985 movie Maa Pallelo Gopaludu. Sarja has also directed and produced some films.[2] Sarja won a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for Gentleman.
