Box Office Analysis - II

From the past

'Pyaar Ke Side Effects' took a 50% industry standard fall and cashed in another 2 crore to its last week's 4 crore total. At 6 crores, its now an above average runner for PNC and brings Saket Chaudhary to the same league as Sujoy Ghosh was years back when he had a success in the form of 'Jhankaar Beats', again with PNC. The side effect of the film is quite big in fact - Mallika has now been acknowledged as an actor! One just wonders if the movie would have been a much bigger success if only it was released as per its original release plans i.e. around 6 weeks back! 'Shiva' took a 90% fall and would end at a total less than that of 'James'. Biggest flop of RGV as a director since one can remember, the film is now around 2.75 crore but would certainly not cross the 3 crore mark. For RGV and Mohit Ahlawat, it is now of paramount importance that they get it right together with 'Sholay'. 'Bas Ek Pal' is a disaster with the 2 week total standing at just above 60 lakhs.

'Naksha' fell further by 60% but even a 3 week total of 10 crore is quite less for this expensive film to be called coverage at the least. Though in a couple of territories it has managed to break even or even earn profits, at an all India level it is a flop. If only Sunny and Vivek were saleable today with a better promotion as a booster, the fate of 'Naksh' would have been exceptionally better. 'Dil Diya Hai' is a disaster as it ends it run at a sub 2.5 crore total.

Weekly collections of 'Lagey Raho Munabhai' from big cities still run in crores, that too in its 4th week! With a mere 35% fall, the movie bagged in another 7.5 crores and now has touched 55 crores! Tremendous. Mumbai continues to be astonishing with 1.5 crore whereas Delhi too had 1 crore to contribute. With collections of the week gone by looking promising and 2 more open weeks before Diwali/Eid release arrive, the film is all set to fight it out with 'Krrish' at the box office which is still year's biggest money spinner at 65 crores! KANK has completed 50 days at the box office and should exit with a 47 crore total in the long run.

In the future

There is no calm before the storm with at least 6 films and a documentary vying for screen space this Friday. There is a mad rush before October 20th arrives though it is quite obvious that 99% of them would hardly find a screen to play with both 'Don' and 'Jaan-e-man' coming with record prints. Nevertheless, 'Zindaggi Rocks' s the best bet of the week mainly due to Sushmita Sen and Shiney Ahuja's presence. Still, the buzz is hardly rocking to give this film a heartening start. 'Jaana - Let's Fall In Love' and 'Iqrar - By Chance' have some factors in common - they both have newcomers in the leads and boast of good music. Out of the two, the former is at least better promoted and may have an edge. 'Mera Dil Leke Dekkho' comes without informing at all and there are hardly any enthusiasts to 'take' the 'dil'! 'Bhoot Unkle' seems like a non-starter all the way. 'Seven Islands And A Metro' is a documentary film that would find a selective release and even selective audience. 'Gafla' is a film based on stock markets and it would be easy to count people on fingers who have even heard of this film.
