Remake of Chashme Buddoor?

Sai Paranjpe made some of the most hilarious and new-age movies in the eightees. Two of her films that immediately come to mind are 'Chashme Baddoor' and 'Katha'. The humour was subtle and spontaneous while the setting was progressively modern. Now, I was surprised to come across a notice in a trade magazine that a producer has bought the rights for remaking Sai's 'Chashme Buddoor'. This is one remake that will be really exciting in every sense of the word.

'Chashme Baddoor' along with 'Jaane Do Yaaron' is classic comedy that will be remembered for ever. And even though I am not really in favour of remakes, I feel, this is one film that the youth of today must watch in a new avatar. Starring Farukh Sheikh, Rakesh Bedi, Ravi Baswani, Deepti Naval and Saeed Jaaffri, CB is a story of three bachelors who lust after the blondes on their walls but wish to marry a simple intelligent girl.

Remakes like Remixes of old film songs are inevitable. I still remember a conversation I had with a senior executive in a music company a good five years ago when she said it's better to remix songs which were not so popular when they were released first. There's a novelty value in them, she had said then. Examples of a few such remix songs that raked in huge collections are 'Kaanta Laga' and 'Kaliyon Ka Chaman'. There's no doubt that the remix of these two numbers made it Big while not many would have even known about their original existence (Even Bappi Lahri didn't know that he had composed 'Kaliyon Ka Chaman' in early 1970s).

Similarly, films like 'Victoria No. 203' and 'Chashme Baddoor' have a good chance for they were not as big a hit as a 'Don' or 'Umrao Jaan' when released first. I am specially keen on the latter as it's a classic and if it's made well, it can be a treat for the hipsters of Today's generation.
