Metro director wants Censor Board to define films with ‘A’ certificate

Ananda Krishnan, director of the upcoming film Metro, has requested Regional Censor Board in Chennai to clearly specify as to what basis films are classified and awarded with ‘U’ and ‘A’ certifications. Ananda Krishnan, who made the Vidharth-Hardika Shetty starrer Aal in 2014, is back with his second venture Metro which has Sirish and Bobby Simha in lead roles. The film, which releases next Friday (24th June) in theatres, has been given an ‘A’ certificate by the Censors. Speaking to newsmen recently, Ananda Krishnan explained how tough it was for him to get a certification from the Censors. “We titled the film as Metro as the film seeks to explain the chain-snatching and other acts of theft taking place in metros in the country. We knew that we won’t get an ‘U’ certificate the moment when we decided to title the film as Metro; however, what we least expected was to be told that the Censors won’t certify the film at all. “When we sent the film for review, it got an ‘A’ certificate; when I demanded that the film be provided an ‘U/A’ certificate, I was asked to chop off many sequences to which I didn’t agree. I waited restlessly for 50 days when I sent the film for review; nobody knows what I underwent during those days awaiting the film to be censored. “There is a tendency among people in general and movie-goers in particular to view films with ‘A’ certificate as high on glamour quotient or obscene sequences/dialogues. At times, films are given ‘A’ certificate also for the violent stunt sequences. In this backdrop, I personally feel that it was time for the Censor Board to come clear on the issue and explain what makes up an ‘A’ certificate film,” concluded Ananda Krishnan.

In the film, Bobby Simha one again plays a negative role after Neram, Jigarthanda and Masala Padam. Sirish Saravanan is the lead hero.

The 'Metro' Effect: After Tasting Success Actor Shirish Is Now Raring To Go

Actor Shirish, who describes the unexpected success of Tamil thriller Metro as rewarding, says it has boosted his confidence to continue experimenting without worrying about the outcome. "We never anticipated such an overwhelming response. We thought the film might have a decent run, but we definitely didn't expect it to create this kind of an impact. Although a small film, the way audiences have received it, has made it big," Shirish told IANS. Directed by Ananda Krishnan, it has been three weeks since Metro released, and it is still going strong at the box office. "The film's success has boosted my confidence and helped me understand what audiences seek from films nowadays. I've realised that it's possible to make a socially relevant film in a way it will appeal to public, without being preachy," he said. While the critics and audiences loved the film, appreciation has also come from industry peers. "The most unexpected appreciation came from director AR Murugadoss and M Sasikumar. Actor Vishal called and appreciated my work and even tweeted positively about the film," said Shirish, who has already earned the sobriquet 'Metro anna'. "In the interiors of Tamil Nadu, people couldn't pronounce my name right. Hence, they started calling me 'Metro anna (brother)' when I went on theatre visits. I didn't mind because it only shows how much they've accepted the film," he added. The success has added "pressure" on Shirish to keep up the good work. "The fact that audiences have accepted me means a lot. They made me responsible and I should live up to their expectations by continuing to experiment," said Shirish, who doesn't want to restrict himself to hero-centric scripts. "Any character with scope for acting is fine for me. I want to establish myself as an actor and not get caught up in the hero image. I like to take up roles that challenge me and push me to experiment. I don't even mind playing a negative character provided there is scope to perform," said Shirish, whose latest passion is singing. He has crooned in the upcoming Tamil tele-film 'Thaal'. "I've composed and sung nearly half a dozen songs. One of my friends who heard my songs requested that I sing for his film and I thought why not. The track has been received very well," he said.
