Captain's effort

With just three weeks to go for the Assembly election in the State, actor and president of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam Vijayakanth, is keen on getting his Perarasu released before the elections. Though the movie has been completed long back, it is still lying in the cans due to financial constraints faced by its producer Khaja Mohideen. For Vijayakanth, the movie is very crucial for it has his political message. Hence efforts are on from Vijayakanth's camp to have the movie released by the last week of April, which looks like a daunting task. Featuring Vijayakanth in a dual role, the movie is directed by a debutant Jeppi A Y.

Captain's hour of reckoning

The coming days will decide the fate of actor and president of newly floated political party DMDK. With just a week away for the State to go to polls, the actor-turned-politician is busy campaigning by making whirlwind tour all over the State. The heat and the dust has already taken toll on the actor's throat. After addressing a spate of meeting in the last two months, the actor suffered sore throat and had to cancel a few public meetings in the midway. Just the lone star campaigner in his party (unlike his opponents), Vijayakanth plans to intensify his campaign in the coming days. Pitted against a strong candidate in Vridhachalam where he is contesting, Vijayakanth has decided to spend a couple of days there to seek votes for himself. Reiterating that he has succeeded in creating a impact with his campaign, Vijayakanth is hopeful of securing some seats in his maiden attempt at the elections.

Captain proves a point

Vijayakanth's newly floated Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has emerged the key player in deciding the poll outcome in Tamilnadu securing a good percentage of votes polled. Besides, Captain himself has won the Vridachalam Assembly seat considered to be the bastion of PMK. A cheerful Vijayakanth, on the good showing of his party said, 'our party floated only a few months ago has managed to leave an impression. It is a pleasant news for me.' Asked about his playing spoilsport for the runner-up in over 120 constituencies, Vijayakanth said, 'people's support has enthused me. Coming days would be difficult. But we would continue our good run. Thanking the voters in the State, his party candidates and party cadre for the good show, he said, he would take up issues concerning public life in the Assembly. In Chennai alone, in over half-a-dozen constituencies, DMDK contestants bagged votes which spoiled the prospects of either the DMK or AIADMK candidates. Captain entry to the Assembly marks a new beginning for an actor away from the Dravidian politics.

Captain ready for second innings

It was time for the Nadigar Sangam to go into a huddle on Sunday. Lead by Vijayakanth, the members of the South India Film artistes Association (SIFAA) convened their annual general body meeting on Sunday to discuss on the forthcoming elections to be held on 30 July. The biggest question on everyone's lips in Sunday's meeting was whether Vijayakanth would seek a reelection for the top job in the association. The actor, who has been just elected as an MLA to the State Assembly, made it clear in the meeting Sunday that he might go in for a re-run if put up as a candidate after common consensus. It looks likely that the existing team of office-bearers including president Vijayakanth and general secretary Sarath Kumar would be re-elected. Various resolutions including one congratulating DMK chief M Karunanidhi for becoming the Chief Minister for the fifth time was passed. The meeting also acknowledged Jayalalithaa on her becoming the leader of the Opposition, Vijayakanth for getting elected from Vridhachalam Assembly constituency and S Ve Shekher from Mylapore. The meeting also passed a resolution thanking the DMK government for taking a decision to instal thespian Sivaji Ganesan's statue at the Marina. Among those who took part in the meeting were Nepolean, Radharavi, Manorama, Alex, Thyagu, Sandhya, Murali, Vijayakumar Senthil, Mansoorali Khan.

Captain dons khaki again

Captain Vijayakanth, who is known to play the honest cop's role in his earlier roles, is back to don the khaki again. The actor-turned-politician is all set to commence his 150th film. Planning big, Vijayakanth has roped in director Madesh to wield the megaphone for his 150th film. Madesh had been a long-time associate of director Shankar and has co-produced Mudhalvan.
