Salman is ‘Ek Tha Tiger’
As soon as Kabir Khan’s [earlier directed New York] next with Salman Khan in the lead went around circles speculations were bound to happen regarding its casting and the title of the film. After Salman put an end to the rumors that he’s not doing a super hero flick with Kabir Khan but only a hero flick, a title came into limelight. This Salman Khan’s new film with Kabir Khan under Yashraj films on the lines of romantic thriller is titled as ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. Salman said that “Aditya Chopra and he had met before on various projects, however, he was absolutely convinced when approached by Kabir and Aditya for this film”. “I’m honoured to be working with Yashji, who has worked so closely with my Dad in the past,” added Salman. Yash Chopra, speaking about the project, said it was a very happy moment for him. “Everyone knows my association with Salim saab, having worked together on Deewaar, Trishul and Kaala Patthar. It is a very happy moment for me and YRF to have his son Salman with us for the first time. Over the years, Salman has become a very matured and talented actor and both he and the beautiful Katrina have a tremendous connect with their audiences. Combined with Kabir’s edgy directorial skills, we can all look forward to a thrilling film. I really loved the script which is based on a story written by Adi and I am sure that the whole team will do an excellent job on this project.” Kabir Khan and Neelesh Mishra have written the screenplay and dialogues while Aseem Mishra will be the DOP. Aseem had earlier worked with Kabir on 'New York'. Pritam will score the music of the movie. Salman and Katrina did shot for a photo shoot yesterday for ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. Though another title Sher Khan was locked first it seems that the makers right now finalized ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. And regarding the photo shoot both Salman and Kat were looking smokin hot.
Amit had Jaya, I had Jennifer, says Shashi Kapoor
'Amit had Jaya while I had Jennifer and that was the reason why we could do so many films together non-stop and still remain in good health,' admitted veteran actor Shashi Kapoor in a television interview yesterday recounting his long association with Amitabh Bachchan in films like 'Deewar', 'Shaan', 'Namak Halal', 'Do Aur Do Paanch', 'Kabhi Kabhi', 'Kaala Pathar', 'Trishul' and more. Shashi Kapoor is the son of legendary theatre-film actor Prithviraj Kapoor and brother of arguably the biggest showman of Indian cinema Raj Kapoor and super hit actor Shammi Kapoor. Having started his career in such illustrious lineage Shashi earned super fame with 'Jab Jab Phool Khilen', a musical hit where he starred opposite Nanda. Yash Chopra's multi-starrer 'Waqt' added to his stardom. And then started the phase in the 1970s when he starred in several commercial successes like 'Deewar', 'Chor Machaye Shor', 'Sharmilee' etc. He was married to Jennifer Kendel, a British actress in 1958 at a tender age of 20. This woman had a great effect on Shashi Kapoor's life. Not only he went on to star in serious films like 'Shakespearewala', 'Bombay Talkies', 'Heat and Dust' etc with her he also produced '36 Chaurangee Lane', a film in which Jennifer acted with great perfection. Although Kapoor's are known to develop fat early in life, it was because of Jennifer's strict diet that Shashi remained in shape till she died in 1984 of cancer. After all in spite of being elder to Amitabh Bachchan by at least three to four years, Shashi passed off as his younger brother in many of the films they worked together. One regret Shashi Kapoor has is that Jennifer was not alive when he was awarded the National Award for best actor for the film 'New Delhi Times' in 1986. Although he failed as a producer director ('Utsav' and 'Ajooba' being a case in point) Shashi Kapoor has played his part in style. Yes, he did turn a distributor by default too. But that was for his elder brother Raj Kapoor when none of the professional distributors were willing to buy 'Bobby' after the debacle of 'Mera Naam Joker'. Shashi Kapoor continues to smile that radiant smile as he notices that daughter Sanjana is doing a great job of taking the Prithvi Theatre (A dream woven by Jennifer) while son Kunal is doing well for himself. His last film as an actor was 'In Custody' for Ismail Merchant. And no, he doesn't wish to wear the grease paints once again. Here's saluting this giant of Indian cinema who has played a big part in taking the world of illusions forward.
The Magic of Salim-Javed Once Again
Story, Screenplay and Dialogues by Salim-Javed. This was a prominent credit on the silver screen in the Hindi Film world that changed the fate of movie making. It was great to see a credit in Farhan Akhtar's 'Don''Adapted from the original screenplay by Salim-Javed. It's time to talk about this deadly-duo who re-wrote the art of storytelling in Hindi films. At many an occasion they were more powerful than the director. And they charged more money than the big stars of their films. If a film poster carried the name Salim-Javed, it was assumed that the film is going to be a silver jubilee at least. In fact the practice of putting the name of the story writers on the posters was started by them. In an era of limited television appeal, a film's poster was the biggest advertisement for a film in those days. Although they had a gap of ten years between them (Salim Khan is ten years elder to Javed Akhtar) their team is what the folklores are made of. They started off with an obscure film 'Sarhadi Lootera' where Salim Khan acted while Javed wrote the dialogues. Once the team was formed, roles were well defined as well. While Salim Khan was good with carving plots of a story, Javed was excellent with dialogues. Their filmography during the 1970s reads the biggest hits of Hindi cinema like 'Haathi Mera Saathi', 'Seeta Aur Geeta', 'Zanjeer', 'Sholay', 'Deewar', 'Trishul' and 'Don' to name a few. They parted ways in the early 1980s due to ego hassles and their individual attempts didn't bear the same fruits. While Salim Khan achieved a degree of success with Sanjay Dutt's 'Naam', Javed Akhtar struck gold with 'Betaab'. But apart from that they couldn't do much of recognition. Today, Javed Akhtar is a prominent lyricist and his son Farhan Akhtar is one of the most promising directors we have today. Salim Khan's son Salman Khan is one of the biggest superstars of Indian cinema. MusicMazaa salutes the work done by Salim-Javed. Do let us know the state of Hindi cinema if these two greats decide to join hands once again today.
Sexy Sam Rocks at 64
Sexy Sam turns 64 today. And the euphoria doesn't seem to be dimming amongst his multitudinous fans all over the world. Even though he is not celebrating his birthday today due to the ill health of his mother Teji Bachchan (89), the deluge of fans still continue to converge outside his colossal bungalow 'Jalsa' since morning today. These fans brought cards gifts from all over India (Many of them have been coming every year for the last several years). Apart from this there have been reports of people worshipping his photographs and praying for his long life. The popularity of Big B continues to soar though he himself in his typical self-effacing style appears to be embarrassed by the hullabaloo around a 'mere birthday' as he himself says. Amitabh Bachchan is one of the biggest mascots of India. He is known the world over, not only amongst a surfeit of Asians, but even amongst foreigners ranging from Britishers, Americans, Dutch, Germans, Kenyans, Indonesians, Malaysians to name a very few. His appeal spreads over three generations. His films like 'Deewar', 'Sholay', 'Amar Akbar Anthony', 'Lawaris', 'Abhimaan', 'Trishul', 'Namak Halal', 'Satte Pe Satte', 'Dostana', 'Parwana', 'Anand', 'Zanjeer', 'Coolie' and 'Agnipath' have a timeless appeal. Then there was a time period when he went through a lean period. The fiasco of his firm ABCL, the debt that followed, five year break from films and an image crisis as the public didn't accept his grown-up-man romancing-nubile-nymphets feature in films like 'Lal Badshah' and 'Chote Miya Bade Miyan'. Amitabh Bachchan weathered that storm with amazing dignity and composure. And then 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' happened in his life. The country discovered its compassionate quiz master with impeccable Hindi and ageless mannerisms. Big B entered his best phase thereafter. Although he calls himself a character artiste, yet today his name spells class and success. Films like 'Black', 'Khakee', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum', 'Dev', 'Sarkar', 'Bunty Aur Babli', 'Baaghbaan', 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' and 'Mohabbatein' re-established him like never before. He is seen promoting all sorts of products on the small screen ranging from hajmola, suiting shirtings, cars, pens, washing powder, batteries, real estate etc. And his list of forthcoming films is amazing too: 'Cheeni Kum', 'Eklavya', 'Bhootnath', 'Baabul', Johnie Walker', 'God Tussi Great Ho' etc. The biggest recent news related with Bachchan is his persona as Gabbar Singh in Ram Gopal Verma's forthcoming 'Ram Gopal Verma Ke Sholay'. In other words Sexy Sam is Rocking. MusicMazaa wishes Amitabh Bachchan heartiest birthday wishes and here's hoping that he continues to dazzle the world of cinema with his stellar performances.
