Convergence of Art and Commercial in Bollywood

Times now there are plenty of changes happen across the 'woods' that determine a new trend that incorporate a converging attitude to bring together commercial and reality cinema.

It is evident from recent releases in several leading 'woods' altogether.

Apart from getting accolades in foreign soil these genres have large audience in domestic regions too.

Shyam Benegals 'Welcome to Sajjanpur' will be screened at London International Film Festival which is going to happen between 15th to 30th October. The film is slated to release on 19th September in India.

Nonetheless five more features including Nandita Das's Firaaq, Santosh Sivan's Tahaan, Ketan Mehta's Rang Rasiya, Shashank Ghosh's Quick Gun Murugan, Atul Sabharwal's short film Midnight Lost and Found are to be screened in the festival.

These films have both characteristics of commercial as well as reality film tag. Story is the real hero for these genres and mostly cast with little known actors. It is not directors of these films do not like about casting big or leading stars in them instead would prefer to bring out best performance from raw talents. Secondly, a front line actor may take up the limelight of the flick pushing behind other prominent contributions.

Going against such rumored thoughts Shyam Benegal came out transparent to nullify by saying that budget permit and story justify to incorporate big stars in a venture certainly he will do it so, since they are potential to lure large crowds for the films.

He also illustrate with two things that increased revenue for any film through large presence of overseas market and mushrooming multiplexes across the country.

However, there is a risk of rejection by the mass which is unbearable to Corporate because they are answerable to all the stake holders. But they are taking all into account before accepting a project proposal.

Hence it can be assumed that there is a life for reality genre in India for next few years. Even it may turn out to be a big change in favour of reality genre.

As a positive development in Karnataka where Girish Kasaravlli is trying to establish a marketing model for such movies by releasing in a single multiplex with a single show to his Gulabi Talkies.

He says collection is so for satisfactory after viewed by art lovers and expects more crowds across the society.

Marketing of these genres has to place through DTH, cine associations and special screenings etc to thrust the convergence towards more success.
