Kollywood on a strike from Oct 17

Erstwhile it was the Cauvery and Sethu project issues, now the Tamil film fraternity will stage a massive demonstration at Rameswaram on October 19, to espouse the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils and to halt the ongoing genocide in the Island Nation.

A decision to this effect was taken at a joint meeting of the Tamil Film Producer's Council, Tamil Film Director's Association, Film Employees Federation of South India and South India Film Artistes Association.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, eminent film director Bharathiraaja said the meeting also decided to observe a three-day strike from October 18 to 20.

The entire film activity in Tamil Nadu, including productions, would come to a standstill for three whole days.

The film artistes would assemble at the southern tip of Rameswaram on October 19, where a massive demonstration, involving the people of Tamil Nadu, would be held. The demonstration is to send raise a unified voice against the mindless killing of innocent Tamils to be heard both at New Delhi and Sri Lanka.

Besides calling for immediate halt to the killings, the agitation was also to seek India's intervention and stop providing any arms assistance to the Lankan Military.

The film industry also decided to wear black badges till October 20 to condemn the killings.

It may be recalled that the Tamil film industry had staged fasts on the Cauvery and Sethu issues and has now decided to express their concern for the Sri Lankan Tamils, in which film distributors and all those associated with the film industry will be a part of the protest.
