Bharya Athra Pora is the tale of reformation; of a man who loses his way and finally finds it. The script squeezes in a few contemporary issues to make it look less mundane. A middle-aged married man finds a whole new world on Facebook, even falling in love with a girl he hasn't seen before. He does a lot of bad things; cheats on his wife, goes for booze parties and even brings his wife to police station at midnight to release him on bail.
There is nothing new about this much told tale of suffering, sacrifice and selfless generosity. Yet there are a few likable moments in Bharya Athra Pora, courtesy Jayaram and Gopika who play the lead roles in the film with a carefully restrained performance.
It moves around a school teacher named Sathya Nathan (Jayaram) and his silent, suffering employed wife Priya (Gopika). For a change, Priya's silence is not permanent. She breaks it whenever necessary and she is not the ever-pardoning goddess. She is more like a real woman who not only cries and sighs, but gets angry too. She even vents out her anger on her husband and son.
An element of predictability runs along the tale which slackens the narrative. The impending transformation of the ruined lead character turns out to be a tormenting wait and despite some fairly well-written sequences, the film never raises above the average watch.
