Nike Ditches Pacquiao After Gay 'Animals' Slur

Nike has cancelled its sponsorship deal with boxer Manny Pacquiao after he described gay couples as "worse than animals".

It follows an online petition urging the sportswear giant to ditch the Filipino fighter.

Pacquiao, an eight-time champion, made the comments during his campaign for a seat on the country's senate.

He told local broadcaster TV5: "It's common sense.

"Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female.

"If men mate with men and women mate with women, they are worse than animals."

"We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent," a Nike statement said.

"Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community.

"We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao, which is accurate."

Pacquiao's remarks sparked widespread criticism, as well as the hashtags #NoToManny2016 and #WorseThanAnimals,

The boxer tweeted an apology on Tuesday - but also said he stood by his beliefs.

He posted: "I'm sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I've hurt. God Bless!"

Gay marriage is illegal in the Philippines, a country where 80% of the 100 million population is Catholic.

There are gay marriages at some small churches but they are not recognised by the church or the state.

The 37-year-old boxer is revered by many in the Philippines after rising to become one of the best pound-for-bound boxers in the world.

He is now a congressman and has his sights set on one of 12 vacant senate seats.
