James Vasanthan was born in Tiruchirapalli (Trichy), studied first at YWCA Primary School (Presently BHEL Matric) and later at Bishop Heber Hr Sec School (Teppakulam) and later graduated in English literature in Bishop Heber College, and then did his PG in English in Jamal Mohammad College.[1] Later, he graduated in Carnatic music from Madras University and in Western music from Trinity College, U.K. He holds a diploma in Pianoforte, Guitar and Theory of Music.
Though music was his "first love he forayed into television as an anchor in SUN TV, later to become the most-popular and successful anchor in Tamil television channels and is still going strong in spite of becoming a popular composer in the film industry in the year 2008.
n 2003, James Vasanthan released a pop album titled "Vasanai", only to exhibit himself as a composer. which was not known to many until then. Though, musically it was a good commodity, it hardly made any difference to his dream of becoming a film composer.
Even before that, he had composed music for many good Christian cassettes numbering around 300. He still continues to arrange music for many gospel productions. In 2008, he eventually entered the Chennai film industry as a music director by composing the songs and score for the Tamil film Subramaniyapuram, directed by M. Sasikumar, who was a student at St.Peter's Public School in Kodaikanal, where he went to teach music after his post-graduation.
The song "Kangal irandal" is believed to have made a record in digital downloads at that time. It was the most favourite song of most composers in the south, which was mentioned by themselves in various interviews across various media.
