Pokkiri Raja 2014 Review

by MyMazaa.com

After an intelligently made social thriller Tamizhuku En Ondrai Azhuthavum (TEOA), director Ramprakash Rayappa teams up with Jiiva and Hansika for an action comedy film - Pokkiri Raja. Sibiraj plays the baddie while D Imman handles the music department for this movie produced by PTS Films International. So let’s check if the Raja is really worth the crown?

We would have witnessed a lot of movies that make us yawn, but have you ever seen a film that actually revolves around yawning? Pokkiri Raja is an easy going guy who has yawning deficiency.

After playing some handsome looking sophisticated roles in films like Yaan, Endrendrum Punnagai and Neethaane En Ponvasantham, Jiiva gets back to his mass roots with Pokkiri Raja. Roles like these aren’t new for Jiiva and he has brought his experience into place adequately.

Sibiraj gets to play what his father (Sathyaraj) is best at - playing a sarcastic humorous villain. Easily one of his best outings till date, he looks confident on screen. One feels more of his powerful negative shades and less of humor could have worked better.

Hansika travels throughout the film and she has a solid role to play. It might not manage to break the theatre into laughter but the comedy portion is tolerable, thanks to Yogi Babu who plays Jiiva’s ally.

The lone purpose of making this film is to engross the audience with no holds barred entertainment. Searching for logic here might waste your time. Pokkiri Raja manages to mildly engage you throughout because of its unpredictable narrative pattern. When you expect a serious battle between the lead and the antagonist, you are offered with a comedy sequence. The battle between Jiiva and Sibiraj could have been a little more intense.

Similarly the reason for Jiiva’s yawning condition was not established properly. Is it a medical condition or a power? That is something the director has left the audience to guess. In that case the purpose of the film gets diluted. Had it been more focused on Jiiva’s yawning issue or his conflict with Sibiraj, Pokkiri Raja would have been a real Raja.
