Nivin was born in Aluva a town in Ernakulam district, Kerala. He graduated with a B.Tech. in Electronics and Communication from Federal Institute of Science And Technology, Kochi in 2006.[3] He was employed in Infosys, Bangalore,[4] and quit because he lost interest in it
He sent in his photos for Malarvadi Arts Club and was not on the shortlist of 12 actors chosen for the film. Of the five friends in the film, only four were finalised and Vineeth was looking for the fifth when Nivin went for the audition, and got the role. He had no acting experience before that.[3]
He was one of the five guys of a group of friends in Vineeth Sreenivasan’s maiden directorial venture, Malarvadi Arts Club.[5] He did roles in films such as The Metro and Sevenes, brief appearances in Traffic and Spanish Masala, and what The Hindu called "a hugely popular" music video titled ‘Nenjodu Cherthu’ from the album Yuvvh [5] became a hit on youtube.[6] His film Thattathin Marayathu became very successful and a blockbuster.[7][4] It was 2012`s biggest hit [8] and is his biggest hit yet.[9] After Thattathin Marayathu he was called "the current youth sensation" [7] and "hot property".[4] He got offers from directors including Sathyan Anthikad, Rajesh Pillai, Aashiq Abu and Shyamaprasad, after Thattathin Marayathu became a hit.[10]
Nivin is making his debut in Tamil through the film Neram.[8] Nivin has a few upcoming Malayalam films, including Anju Sundarikal, Sunil Ibrahim's Arikil Oraal, fashion photographer Abrid Shine's directorial debut 1983, and director Rajesh Pillai's Motorcycle Diaries, which plots the life of a mobike and the people who've owned it.[11]
