Khara pongal is a savoury porridge-like dish that is traditionally prepared in South India for the Makar Sankranti festival that heralds the arrival of summer. The sweet pongal variety differs only in the spices added, and the two are often cooked together from the same batch of rice and dhal.

Preparation Method

  1. 1 Heat 2 tbsp of Oil in a cooker.
  2. 2 Wash Rice and Moong Dal. Leave them aside.
  3. 3 Saute Cashew Nutnuts in Oil and leave aside.
  4. 4 Add Cumin and Mustard.
  5. 5 When the seeds start crackling, add chopped green Chiliess and fry for few seconds.
  6. 6 Add dal and fry again for a minute.
  7. 7 Add Rice and pour Water.
  8. 8 Add Turmeric Powderr powder, Coconut and Salt.
  9. 9 Put the lid and cook Till third whistle.
  10. 10 Cool and add Cashew Nut, Pepper Powder and chopped Coriander Seedss leaves.
  11. 11 Khara Pongal is ready to serve.
